Question about IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 Notebook

1 Answer

T40 Thinkpad shuts off

First I would get the BSOD error, then various other shutdowns and freezes. I reinstalled XP and it still shuts down without warning. The error reports guide me to download new drivers for my video card or to manually decrease the hardware acceleration. Neither of these have helped. (while reistalling XP the computer shut down numerous times)
Any advice would be great!!

    1) Sometimes there were beeps sometimes there weren't I don't recall how long or short they were, I'll listen next time.

    2) Originally there there was a blue screen, then the screen would just shut down without warning. After reinstalling XP the screen would just freeze (as oppossed to the computer shutting down)

    3) For a while I was using a remote monitor and it didn't help

    4) It is very possible that this is the problem, I found a driver for the video card on Lenovo's web site (I had downloaded every possible update and driver from microsoft's website) that I never used before, and combined with the most recent punch I gave it, it hasn't blacked out on me for three days.

If it is a bad video card (or bent one) I guess that I can correct it by ollowing the PDF on Lenovo's website to dismantle the laptop, and either correct or replace the card.

    I appreciate the help!

    1. Are there a series of beeps (long and short in duration) each time when you start the TP?
    2. When you say shutdown and freeze, is there a picture on the screen that is frozen, or does the screen go blank completely?
    3. Try connecting to a known working monitor if the screen goes blank on you and see if it can be isolated to an output to video issue.
    4. You may have the Ball Grid Assembly problem, a bad video card. Sometimes this is reproduced by applying steady but not overpowering pressure on the left side of the palmrest, replicating possible real life flexing of the unit and the motherboard inside and setting the BGA in a position to send bad or no video.

Actually, if it is the chip for video on the motherboard, you do not replace it. It is a very complicated soldering process that requires special machinery. You can read about this problem by entering relevant terms in a search engine. A novel but risky approach to the problem can be seen on youtube, under t41 reflow I believe. Not for the timid technician. (I should have said "chip" not "card" in my initial post, it was after midnight, so my apologies.)

My acer 5920 laptop freezes when I click shutdown and it just freezes as windows is shutting down. I have installed windows xp sp2.

If your computer freezes, then the problem is related to the registry. When the Windows registry is filled with errors it can't stop your system from properly communicating information.

The only solution for freezing is to clean the registry of corrupt files and various errors. Not only will this prevent computer crashing, it will also speed up your system considerably.

The same model ThinkPad can have different types of network, video and audio drivers and unless you know exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download all the drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver.

When you download the drivers, write down the device driver and it's file name so you have a record of which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files are located on your hard drive.

Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link: -

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true
You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, they will then unzip and expand into a sub folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder (run the set-up file).

Where is the switch to turn on the wireless for the ibm thinkpad t40

The T40 does not have a switch to turn the wireless card, the correct wireless driver only needs to be installed.

After re-installed my t42 2373K1U with windows XP SP3, the internal wireless network controller is no longer working. I have tried to download several drivers from Lenovo website but they all failed to...

When you download the T40 device drivers, they need to be the XP versions.
When you run the driver programs they will be unzipped/expanded to the hard drive in a folder c:\drivers. Then you need to open the various folders and run the setup programs to install the various drivers.
NOTE - The T40 series laptops come with various different manufacturers devices (eg. there are a few different wireless model LANs) and if one version driver doesn't work you need to install a different one. It is a bit of trial and error to find the right one.
