Question about Sony KP-51WS520 51" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

2 Answers

Picture problem Can someone please just send me in the right direction as to wether this will expensive to fix so I can determine if I should spend the money or buy a new lcd. This is what I am seeing. The bottom and the top of the screen bow towards the middle so if there is writing accross the bottom it is looks like and arch so to speak. Also, there are two sets of letters and they are different colors. Like one is green and the other is red or white. I can actually still watch the tv but it is distorted. I have had this tv for 4-5 years now and never had any trouble till now. What do you guys think? Terry

Re: picture problem

Check this thread; The moderator of that forum Larry Dillon has a service manual available he would e-mail. He is also known as "Techman" on Fixya, so you may be able to get him on a live chat. The service manual will tell you exactly how to get into service mode. Hope this helps, if you have trouble getting in touch with Larry / Techman then please ask again :)

Re: picture problem

This is something that can be adjusted from the service menu, to an extent. It's been referred to as the "football affect" as in severe cases your visible screen starts to look football shaped. Here's instructions on how to adjust it. It will take some playing with these settings to get it just right. OPERATION METHOD FOR COARSE ADJUSTMENT (first do it in NTSC Full mode) 1. Enter the service mode and select PJE category. 2. Press the 1 or 4 button on the remote commander to select the item, and then use the joystick to change the data 3. Press button 6 to display the internal test signal (crosshatch) 4. Select GRN CENT (or any item you want to adjust). When BLU or RED is displayed, press the 3 button on the remote commander to change the adjustment color in the order of GRN BLU RED. 5. In GRN, BLU, or RED mode, move the joystick up or down to change the data in vertical direction, or left or right to change the data in a horizontal direction. 6. Before returning to the service mode, press the MUTING + ENTER buttons on the remote commander to write the data. (You must complete step 6 to write the data. If you omit step 6 the set data is returned to the data prior to the adjustment. Like fine adjustment, data can be copied from NTSC Full mode to other modes. And re-register FLASH FOCUS is required for it to work properly (not overwrite your changes). Items available in PJE category for coarse adjustment CENT SKEW SIZE LIN MSIZ (horizontally only) MLIN (horizontally only) PIN KEY (vertically only) For each item (and each color), there are two numbers shown on the screen, one for horizontal data and one for vertical data. Write down those numbers before making any changes, in case you want to change them back. Ok, the things you need to adjust the football effect are pin, and key. Also you may have to work with the bow settings. Pin is what's pushing the corners towards the center of the screem. Bow affects the over all bend of the screen, and key is a wave type adjustment.

No audio on my dvd outputs on my 53fdx20b

If you GOOGLE the model number with "problems" or "audio" you will see this set is prone to problems of this kind.

All audio is routed via one special circuit board and they had all kinds of soldering problems.

Where I work we will not bother to spend 4 hours plus and use expensive soldering station to re-solder all the flat pack chips on the board.

Last I heard board no longer available and if someone wants it fixed we remove the board (easy) and send it to PTS Electronics for rebuild.

Last time we did that it was about 200 but price may be different now.

Convergence problem on my magnavox?

There is no simple fix, the parts needed are vey expensive and then you must still have the TV set back up or the picture will be blurred. I have done this and I wasted $500 and finally ended up with a new falt screen for about what I spent on parts.

I have a 60" rear projection Mitsubishi Tv with a "wavy" picture in the vertical direction. What may be the problem?

You have dreaded model that build around so called V-26 chassis. It's an epic story of Mitsubishi's bad engineering several years ago. They even faced class action about it and issued recall that (of course) already expired by now. You can search web for info on court case against Mitsubishi. This particular issue is caused by faulty components in Format board that is part of the chassis. The only right way to fix it - is to remove whole chassis (sandwich of several boards in metal enclosure) and send it to Mitsubishi to get rebuilt. If you will pay someone for repair of just this board - soon others will fail as well, one of another associated issue - after unplugging TV from the wall outlet you have green blinking light forever (reboot does not come to complete).
Right now Mitsubishi lowered price for rebuilding from $640 to $320 for authorized Repair Centers nationwide. Add to it labor charge for removal/installation (at least $150) and shipping (Mitsubishi assign number for repair and send special padded box that fits chassis) at least another $50.
Also take into consideration that lamp inside of your TV sooner or later have to be replaced. It is another $150-$225.
Calculate all of this together - that's how much you have to spend to watch your TV for another 2-3 years.
Common sense would be to cut you losses and invest in new one.
As for my experience - I've removed/installed those V-26 chassis about 1000 times or so while working for Mitsubishi Authorized Center.
Hope my knowledge of this issue would help you save some money.

Green convergence was bad now tv wont turn on!

The convergenc module is located abouve the board on the right side of the set looking in the back. Its attached to the metal frame you will notice two large STK392-040 ICs mounted to a heat sink. You can get new ICs or a replacement board at the following link for your model. leave an email if you want the convergence board and they will get back to you quickly. Heres the link.

TV has sound but no picture

Everything is worth fixing provided the price is right.  However, in this case it's probably not cost effective to repair the unit.  Start with the easier fixes, such as bulbs, etc.  Even then, some of the components can be quite expensive, or simply unavailable.  I would suggest getting a quote from a local repair shop in order to make an informed decision before you get to far into it.  You could end up spending just as much to repair it as you would on a new unit.

WD-52725 Timer light is blinking and will not stop.

This part will cost you about 650 to 800 bucks my friend. if you have any soldering skills, and can follow directions, I posted a DM board fix. it may just be four small capacitors. Now this set that was used in the fix is not exactly like all the other Mitsubishi TV sets that still have a DM board, but if you can locate the DM board, follow the rest of the repair. if you do not know how to solder, do not take a chance, as this part is way too expensive to be experimenting around with. Get the Capcitors(there is a link there too for the capacitors)and take the DM board to a service shop, as this should not cost you a lot to have a pro do this for you. The DM board fix is located here: Good luck
