One of two engine belts squeals when car is started.

I have a 1989 Lincoln Town Car. One of the belts in my engine squeals when the engine is started. I've taken it to several places and I've gotten a different response each time. I've tried sanding the belt down and oiling the belt. I took it to a local Valvoline station and they said the pulleys might need to be cleaned. Then when I brought it in a week ago to have the oil changed, a different worker said that the belt might be too wide. I need to know, what size belt do I need, and would the sizes be different for the fan belt and the belt for the engine?

How does the belt fit in the groove? It should fit well with no space under the belt (which, if it were too wide, it would have a space). A belt can get 'glazed' over time, and slip and cause the squeal you describe. If the belt is dried up, oiling it seems logical, but in reality you are making it easier for it to slip and make the squeal noise. I would replace the belt, and clean off the pulleys with a clean dry rag the best you can to remove any traces of oil. There is also a product called 'belt dressing' that helps the belt grip better. I would not use this on the belt with oil though, I think you should replace it.

Will 89 town car run without ac belt?

Yes, the car will run fine without the compressor belt, as long as no other part, like the alternator, uses that belt. If the belt is just for the A/C, go ahead and remove or cut it. Many people just remove the belt when the AC no longer works.

On my 1992 ford taurus I replaced the belts and now car is squealing and smoking what now

Assuming that you have routed the belt properly:

Look for a pulley that isn't turning when the engine is running. A seized air pump did this exact thing on a Lincoln Town Car that I recently worked on. My in-laws had a Mercury Zephyr that stopped dead from a seized power steering pump.

Have a helper ready to start the car when you say so. Have a flashlight in hand, if necessary. When the engine is running, look for a seized (not spinning) pulley. It's likely that the belt was damaged if it smoked a lot.

I just recently put a new alternator on my 1989 Lincoln town car and ever since I put it on the belt has been squealing terribly. It squeals when i first turn it on and while I drive but once I put it on...

the squeal can come from a few things, in adequate tension( need to adjust tension), the tensioner has failed (most common cause) or the new alternator has a faulty bearing causing the pulley to seize and the belt to run over it creating friction which in turn is the squeal, inspect that the belts moves no further than 3/4 of an inch when you press on it, if it has a lot of play re adjust, if the belt tensioner is broken or on its way out, it will return very slow after you let go of the bolt, The tensioner should return with force and pretty rapidly.
