Fairly new, rarely used ps3 freezes shortly after any bluray gaming or movie playing. Finished one game and it worked fine with that, but now it only plays cd's and dvd's without freezing. Really don't want to send it off to sony...anyone know an at-home cure for this?
Your PS3 may not be freezing entirely. Look in the top right hand corner of the screen, if the loading sphere is there you've nothing to worry about, and I would reccomend just waiting it out (it unfreezes). If it is not there it is a legitimate freeze and would reccomend sending it off and/or updating the system firmware.

Make sure that your firmware is updated correctly. Also make sure the games are the correct region for the unit you're playing on. You may have an incorrect region setup on the PS3. PS3 games are region locked, either being PAL or NTSC. If the PS3 is set to read PAL (by being set to a region that is PAL, like the UK, Europe, and Japan) it will not read or play an NTSC disc.
Misconfigured or corrupted firmware installations can also cause this problem. Furthermore, pirated games will not play, because they do not have the appropriate security key on the disc.
You can try testing this by creating a new profile on the PS3 and trying to play the games. If you can play them with the new profile, then there is a corruption with the old profile. If you can't play them in the new profile, then it could be the firmware.
Lastly you may have a blown drive. Most PS3 games are dual layer blu ray discs capable of storing large amounts of data. The blu ray drive in the PS3 uses a sequenced dual laser to read the game. If one of the laser emitters has blown, it won't read the game correctly. However, since it doesn't use both emitters to read blu ray movie disks or dvds they'll still play correctly.
Will it play anything? The laser eye may need to be cleaned. Sometimes the drive will play DVDs but not games, or games and bluray movies, but not DVDs .... in that situation, the bluray laser may need to be replaced
You can try clear your movie data from the discs you\'ve played (according to Fox that\'s sometimes the culprit when a disc won\'t even load): restart your PS3 and go to the video menu and scroll up to the BluRay Data section. Go into it and check that it has saved some info for your movies. Now deleted all the data in this folder except the shared data crap, and hopefully your movies start perfectly!!
If that fails try the following:
In the XMB(menus) go to Settings ---> BD/DVD Settings ---> BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI). Turn that off. This has also been known to work.
I am 100% sure that this is the laser your ps3 has two different lasers one is red for regular movies videos or music and one blue for games and bluray movies try to play a blueray movie and if it don't play or plays for few minutes and then freez is more likely your laser it can be replace just look for you ps3 model and buy one for your ps3 model not all ps3's use the same laser there is like 3 diferent lasers
The games are in bluray format. The ps3 has 3 different lasers (built into one) in the drive. When the bluray laser fails but not the others it will continue to play everything except bluray. You can fix this by getting a replacement laser (ebay etc) opening up the console and drive and swapping out the laser. This is fairly easy as its mainly screws, but there are a few cables to be delicate with. Here is a disassembly guide.
If you can hear the disc move, then your disc drive is fine. If you can hear a clicking sound, then the lens is touching the disc, but this is rare in itself. See if your warranty is still good at us.sony.com/support
Hi my name is Juan and here is the answer to your problem I undestand that you have replaced the laser but belive me your problem is with your laser again you got a diffected laser why I know this because I do sell used playstations on ebay I do fix them and I do normally buy lasers by a large quality I don't sell lasers on ebay but I do sell all other parts and some of the lasers I purchase they only play regular dvd's others only bluray dvds and games others only games and others nothing and the problem with ebay sellers is that they say that the lasers are new and the true is they are not they are second hand lasers if you have the kes400aaa they are not new the only new laser you can get on ebay is the kes410a but this laser is for the newer playstations like the new 80Gb the new 160Gb some of the kes400aaa that you buy at ebay or any other place they are good and they do play all types of disks bluray movies, games regular dvds so if I get a difected laser I send it back and they give me credict for it this is why every playstation I sell on ebay I do check the ps3 to make sure it plays all types of cds try to contact the person or company who sell it to you and let them know what is happening thanks and good luck (rate my help)
See if a DVD works. For me, I know my Bluray is ruined because I can watch DVDs and play PS2 games fine but anything Bluray does not work. If a DVD does not work, you have more of a problem, if DVD does work you need a new BlueRay which Sony should take care of for you. If you don't have receipt, etc. like me you can buy a new Bluray (KES-400AAA) on Ebay and use this guide to install it http://edpsystemssupport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=45.
Hope that helps.
no its not recomended it can damage it, let me guess.... not playing ps3 games and bluray disc? its a fault thats happening since the latest online update. if your ps3 is less than a year old phone sony and they will send you a new one out. if warranty has finished, sony can repair it but it will cost you, for their fault! make sure you back up your data before you send it. hope this helps
