My Philips GoGear SA261/17 is doing the SAME thing! It was telling me "Player Problem, Connect to PC and run Device Manager" so I used the Device Manager downloaded directly from the Philips.com/support website.

I ran "firmware upgrade" and it ran successfully, when I disconnected the USB and turned on the MP3 player it said "Firmware upgrading" and it's been like that since YESTERDAY!!!!

    ??????????????????????????????????????????//

Connect to PC and use device manager to repair

If you have a Philips HDD Series, it will not work with Windows Vista or Windows Media Player 11 except for briefly, then the player will stop working one day. Your only hope is to use it with Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10 - it is, basically, an obsolete player at this point in time.

The Philips Device Manager has a strange feature - it only properly updates your device if you have the newest version of the Device Manager:
Download the newest version of the Philips Device Manager:
www.usasupport.philips.com - change your country/language as needed
Enter in your exact model #
Click on the link for your exact model #
Click on the Software & Drivers section
Click on "Firmware Upgrade Software"
Install the new Device Manager
Open and run the "Update" tab

Won't boot up and not recognised when connected to PC

MANUAL FIRMWARE UPGRADE PROCEDURE:
During the upgrading of the firmware, if you turn off the power of M800, either by manually switching off the power or removal of the battery, the file system of M800 will be damaged, which will lead to booting failure problem. When this happens, you will not be able to turn on M800. Booting failure problem can be easily repaired by “manual firmware upgrade”. The procedures for manual firmware upgrade are as follows:

1. After firmware upgrade, only the blue LED under LCD is on, but LCD display is not turned on, please proceed manual firmware upgrade.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Put the battery back into the player again.
* Notice ! : Do not turn on the power.
4. Connect the player to your PC.
* Notice ! : Do not turn on the power.
5. While pressing the volume down button, power on the player.
6. Now PC should recognize M800 as one of its hard disks.
7. Download the latest firmware file into the root folder of the player.
8. Disconnect the player from your PC.
9. The blue light LED under the LCD display will flicker.
10. Wait for about one minute, blue LED is off. Turn on the player.
The manual firmware upgrade is now completed.

My problem

lucky - make sure you are not using MAC or Windows Vista. Make sure the software is installed. Try another usb port in your computer. Try a usb port on another computer with same OS.
Suji - Recovery Mode for Philips' GoGear
Open the Philips Device Manager (Start à All Programs à Philips Digital Audio Player à SAXXX à Philips Device Manager) and click on the “Repair” tab.  Then click on the “Repair” button to start the repair process.  Most of the time, when your player is in that state, the Device Manager will not recognize that your GoGear is plugged in.  If this is the case: Disconnect the player from the PC, and make sure the mp3 player is turned off. Hold in the volume + button on the mp3 player, and reconnect the player to your pc while holding in the volume + button. Continue holding the volume + for 10-15 seconds until a "Found New Hardware Wizard" pops up. It should recover your device if there isn't anything internally wrong with the player. Warning: this procedure will result in your songs being erased off the player, so they will have to be reloaded.

Philips GoGear Firmware Upgrade
You need to get the latest firmware upgrade from the Philips website:
1. Go to www.philips.com/support
2. Enter your country/language
3. Enter your model # SA6045 or whatever
4. Click on the link for your exact model # (the one w/o the "B" in it)
5. Click on "Software & Drivers"
6. Download the updated "Device/Firmware Manager"
7. Once installed, open the Philips Device Manager
8. Click on the "Update" tab, then the "Update" button (with your mp3 player connected to the computer, of course)
9. Your Mp3 players firmware will update automatically
If you do not have the latest version of the Philips Device Manager installed (the latest is the version from the Philips website), then clicking the "Update" button will give you a false positive saying "The firmware on your device is already up to date."

Does not turn on properly

Firmware manager should solve this problem.

  1. First Make sure that you have your PC connected to the internet, as the firmware manager will download the firmware from the firmware server, it is necessary that you have the PC online during the entire the process.
  2. Run the application on your PC at Start->Programs->Philips Firmware Manager->Philips Firmware Manger.
  3. Connect the GoGear player with the PC in normal mode. Switch on the player.
  4. Firmware Manager will start the upgrade process after the player is detected.
  5. Enter the serial number of your device. You can find the serial number as a 14 digital code printed on the sticker near the USB connector of the device e.g. SFxxxxxxxxxxxx and then click NEXT to proceed.
  6. Click the START button, select the firmware and click OK.
  7. The upgrade process will continue to download firmware.
  8. Once the upgrade process is completed, click FINISH to close the application.
  9. You may now disconnect the GoGear Player from your computer.

The "Firmware Upgrading" should only show for about 60 seconds.

You could try removing the battery and restarting.
