-   There is no image from the lens on the LCD screen or captured when a picture is taken.
The LCD works perfectly for menu functions and viewing pictures already taken so the problem must be with the CCD or circuitry to capture the CCD image.

Echoing poolseman The screen will 'go black' because 1. back light failure- [you would see 'shadow or feint images] connector failure to main board. As Poolsman CCD failure - but menu and playback would be OK. Check out which. Either way the manufacturer support web site is the way to go to checkout repair or replacement.
Can you play back ok ? ( i.e. no distortion in playback mode ) if you can but have no image in capture mode then your camera's CCD sensor is faulty and must be replaced. If camera is not more then 2 years old, you should try to have it done free of charge since the sensor should last 10 years +.
