Honda XR200R won't start unless push-started and rattles.

I just bought a used 1997 Honda XR 200R dirt bike (4 stroke). The bike ran fine but would not idle until we ran it for a little bit (an hour or two of nothing extreme, just riding it on the street a bit). I then wanted to hit the trails with it to see how it did. A cousin of mine was riding with me on his '90 Yamaha Blaster and it smoked it. We noticed about an hour of riding it in the back corn fields that it started to smoke a little bit; sounded, ran and idled fine though. We then brought them back because my cousin had to pick a friend up from work, so we noticed that the XR200R was smoking a little bit (unusual for a 4stroke). I kept riding until he returned, for about an hour of riding it in the cornfields and opening it up to it's full potential in 6th gear. Everything seemed fine though it was still a bit smokey. We continued riding for another 2-3hours and brought it back. I wanted to then see how well it stacked up to my other cousin's Yamaha Raptor700. He tore me off the line and i tried to keep up best I could, but to no avail, he smoked me. Before I was gonna call it a day, I figured I'd open it up once more before I put it away. I had it in 6th gear, topping it out (but not overly doing it to where it was whining too loud, just barely got it in 6th) and it cut out on me, the entire engine shut off and I simply coasted, so I tried to kick/push start it as I was still going about 30mph or so. It refused to kick back on, so I simply put it away. It seemed as if I blew the motor because it smelt funny, but we figured maybe some of the water from riding in the cornfields against the hot motor just steamed up. So we put it away to look at it the next day. Next day, we checked all the loose connections and we replaced the oil in it, but it wouldn't turn over. So we had my uncle pull me on a tractor to get it to push start and it popped in 3rd gear. It refused to idle and would only start if we push started it by the tractor, it also sounded very clinky like there was something rattling around in it.

Check your valves. Their usually what makes the "clinking" sound, as for the somking...rings usually do that when they get worn. If you seized your motor, it was probably because your rings broke or got hot and melted to your cylinder wall. This could also cause severe damage to your cylinder wall. Of course this is all just IMO

Hello kstnflip360,

I'm not 'expert" when it comes to motorcycles, however, I know that a "clink" or "rattle" (especially on a small engine such as a dirt bike); could only mean one thing - a bent, loose, or broken push rod, or connecting rod. Again, I'm not expert, but that's what it sounds like to me. I can't really think of anything else inside a motorcycle engine that would make a sound like that. The best way to find out is to take the engine apart and take a look-see.

Sorry I can't tell you exactly what it is. As far as the smoking, you may have had a little water in the oil - or the fuel mixture was off. If the fuel mixture is too rich, the engine will burn hotter than it should which will cause it to shut down. Chainsaws work the same way.

It is imperative that the fuel mixture is correct, and that you're using fresh fuel.

Why is my 1990 xr200r smoking and the plug keeps fouling and spitting oil. New piston and rings valves and seals has great power starts easy but when you shut it off it won't start back cause the

new rings indicates the problem
Rings only go in one way and if installed upside down
pump oil into the combustion chamber
next the ring gaps have to be at 120 degrees apart and not in line
the cylinder was bored out but was the ring gaps checked be fore installing
experience has shown that with most re bores and the correct rings fitted, the ring gap will be 80% of the max wear allowed instead of the minimum gap of .012"
What oil is in use as some oils do not promote sealing and are too "slippery " to allow the rings to bed in on the cylinders

My 2004 Honda Pilot ran fine then a hour later won't start. At first thought battery so we charged up usig one of those chargers you plug in. Lights flicker, and clicking sounds but won't turn

Check batry terminals are secure & free from corosion, check security of earth strap to engine & main power wire on starter, if ok have the batry load tested to ensure it can perform under load as the starter needs a lot of current. Have you tried a jump start?

I just bought a 1983 honda xr 350 dirt bike but the serial number is scratched out so i can not make out the 2 numbers is it possible to tell me the serial numbers so i can insure it?

Good luck mate numbers are usually scratched off for a reason. I would get your money back before you are charged with receiving stolen goods. be careful when buying used items, always have a police check done before you purchase them especially motor vehicles.
Have a nice day,Timo.

Wont start after 6 mos. I changed the spark plug, drained & added fresh gas, checked the fuel filter... Kicks over fine. Ran for 4 seconds, then it died. Always ran & started great before.

With a new plug and fresh gas it should start. Check to make sure there isn't a kill switch turned off or that the gas petcock from the tank to the carb is on.

How did you check the fuel filter? Disconnecting it from the fuel line that goes to the carb is the best way, making sure the gas is turned on under the tank. Bleed off a little gas into a can or something just to make sure the filter isn't plugged.

The last thing I'd do is take off the air filter and spray a little starting fluid in the carb. It may start and run several times if there is old gas in there somewhere. Remember the bowl on the carb is probably still full of old gas. After some fresh fuel reaches the plug it should start and continue to run.

(You might drain the bowl on the carb of ols gas before you go any further)

Good luck!
