My seagate external drive is not working correctly

I have a Seagate external hard drive 400gb that I am running on OSX. When I start up the drive it is really slow. When I open up the drive it takes a long time to show the file list. Then when I try to open up a file the entire computer gets frozen up and nothing seems to happen and I have to turn the drive off manually in order to get it back to normal...

I have about 300gb of important info that i need to get off of the disk. Can you help me!!!!???

The part no. for the drive is part no. 9y7686-500
I believe it is a barracuda seagate drive

I tried connecting it to another older mac that we have (g4 I believe) currently I'm on a PowerMac Intel... it didn't even register there.

I tried both through a firewire and a USB connect. I also tried different ports.

Then the problem is either inside the drive itself or between the drives interface and the enclosures interface. If this problem is preventing you from getting all the data off the drive you might want to take it to a local repair shop. They can run some diagnostic software to get a look at the drives defect reporting and see if anything looks odd. They could also remove the drive from the enclosure and install it as an a computer as an internal drive, or in a different enclosure if they have one. At 400 gigs I'm assuming this is a standard 3.5" drive. If it's a defect with the enclosure than the drive should work fine. If after being installed it is still slow than there is something wrong with the drive itself, in which case your in real trouble. Start to cherry pick the really important files and get things backed up asap.

It sounds like you have a bad connection between the computer and the drive. Maybe a bad cable or connector. Is it slow when you plug it into a different computer?

Looked all over my compaq and cant find my seagate 500gb xt hard drive

the hard drive even though it might be mentioned to be external is still inside the casing of the laptop and can only be seen if you open the laptop completely.

Please i need the power adapter rating for seagate

Have you got the original power adapter?
If so the voltage details are printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter.
If the external USB Seagate hard drive houses a 31/2" drive then it requires an power adapter that provides +12 volts and +5 volts both supplying approx 2000mA of current.
If the Seagate uses a 21/2" (laptop) hard drive then it only requires +5 volts power adapter.
The only problem is the power connector to the external drive, make sure it suits the external hard drive unit and the power pins are correctly wired for the Seagate. If the polarity of the plug is incorrect lt wired (ie reverse polarity) then it could damage the USB hard drive and adapter case.

Seagate Drive is asking to be reformatted?

Yes your assuumtion is correct, you WILL loose all your data.

I have been there before.... and the outcome was not good.

If your PC will recognize the drive and give it a drive letter, you can run chkdsk (Check Disk) from the Run prompt to verify that the drive does not have damaged sectors. many times chkdsk will fix minor errors allowing you to access the drive again.
Click Start, Run CMD, enter, then type: X: (X being the drive letter of the Seagate) then type chkdsk /r and hit enter. If it completes 100% try accessing the drive again.
If you cannot acquire a drive Letter when you plug in the Seagate try going to Disk Management and assigning a drive letter.
Click Start, then Right click on My Computer and click Manage, then click Disk Management. See if your Seagate drive shows up in the list. If it does, right click on the larger box on the right and see if it will allow you to assign a drive letter.

Another option you may have is taking the hard drive out of the Seagate enclosure and either connecting it as a secondary drive in a desktop PC, or installing it into another external enclsure USB device, and try again to access the drive.

If none of these options work, your last option is to contract a Disk Recovery Service to acquire your data. They are usually very expensive.

Cant format 400gb usb flash drive

So the disk is recognized? And there is a valid partition on the disk?
What is the error you are getting?
Have a look at this external hard disk troubleshooting, maybe it helps you along.

Yesterday my USB external 400GB Seagate hard drive started making clicking noise and my desktop can no longer detect it. Please help. I don't have lots of money to pay to recover data.

Sorry to report that the solution offered to me was referrals to companies that do data recovery but the price is too expensive for ordinary people like myself. I will have to take out a second loan in order to afford their cost! I wish I could be referred to companies who offer a more affordable/reasonable cost for data recovery for non-business owners who happen to have important documents stored in their hard drives but will not bankrupt them if not retrieved.

Disappointed,

External Seagate Hard Drive making clicking noise

Did you plug it into a different USB port?

The click noise (at least from the usb hdds that i have had) is due from it being underpowered. So if you plugge it into a different USB, move it back to the other.

Help!

You have not yet formatted the drive to work with you MAC. You will need to use your MAC's Disk Utility to format the drive in order to write to the drive, but be aware that formatting will erase everything already on the external drive, so back up anything on the drive you want to keep first.

Power supply for Seagate 400GB

Ebay or seagate.com may be a solution.
I've used those Seagate portables and 2 have caused problems.
Or disassemble the unit, remove the drive and buy a portable case or USB adapter.
