Question about Canon EOS 40D Digital Camera with 28-135mm lens

1 Answer

CAMERA IS THREE MONTHS OLD. ON MY LAST OUTING I NOTICED A PERFECT CIRCLE SPOT ONLY IN SHOTS OF THE SKY. THE SPOT IS IN THE IDENTICAL PLACE ON ALL SKY SHOT PHOTOS NO MATTER WHAT FOCAL LENGHT IS USED. THE LENSE IS CLEAN AT BOTH ENDS. I CHECKED MY PHOTOS WHEN I ORIGINALLY GOT THIS CAMERA AND THERE IS NO ROUND SPOTS ANYWHERE. THE SPOT IS IN THE UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER OF ANY SHOT WHERE THERE ARE CLOUDS OR SKY. FLASH PICTURES, INTERIOR PICTURES AND THE LIKE, THERE IS NO SPOT. PLEASE HELP...RICHIE

If you have another lens, switch it and take some shots of the sky. If the spot is gone, it probably was the lens that needs cleaning/servicing. However, it's more likely that there's dirt on your CCD. On your camera's menu, select mirror lockup/clean CCD (I can't remember the exact terminology but you get the idea).

After you select that, the mirror will stay up. Remove the lens and you'll see that the CCD is now exposed. Use a blower (don't use your mouth to blow as you will end up with spit in the camera) to clear out any dust/debris on the CCD. Don't touch the CCD.

Turn off the camera and you'll hear the mirror go back down. Re-attach your lens and try some shots.

Are these flash pictures? Are the spots in different places on each picture? If the answer to both questions is yes, the spots are dust particles in the air reflecting the flash back into the lens.

You have dust on the sensor. Google the words "cleaning a DSLR sensor" and you will find sites explaining the procedure with pictures and where you can get the supplies necessary. It may sound complicated and scary but in reality it's very easy.

The spots are dust on your sensor. You can clean these yourself but you must learn the techniques first. Google the words...cleaning a DSLR sensor. You will be taken to sites which will explain in detail how to do it and what supplies you will need. It may seem daunting at first, but it is really easy once you know how.

Prints have darker same color circles are the same size.

The ccd sensor is dirty. Have it cleaned at a camera shop. You can do yourself with sensor swabs and eclipse fluid but it a is very delicate operation. Local shop here cleaning is $45 and no spots, well worth it.

Purple Tint Sky

auto white balance should work OK. I was thinking maybe you had accidentally switched it to the Fixed setting. Hmm. You said you were using Normal and Landscape modes. Just to see how it works, I would suggest switching from Program mode to Full Auto. See if that fixes your purple skies. I don't know why it would, but it is something to try
