If you have a second hard drive inside the pc you can copy them there. Otherwise you'll need to copy to a CD or USB drive. The hard part is going to be figuring out where all your files/pics are located at. You can do a search through windows explorer by extension on the whole C: drive. Ex. search for all *.pdf files for Adobe, all *.jpg for pictures. Also be sure to save your profile as it contains your IE Favorites, My Documents, My Music, etc.

Firstly, to save all your personal files search in the locations you normally save your files (Mostly in my documents folder). Use search to find file formats you normally store for example .jpg, .gif, .bmp, .txt, .rtf, .doc, .docx, .pdf etc depending upon your usage type and move them to another PC or burn on a disk.

Secondly, instead of formatting your OS, you can try and repair the installation if you have the original OS installation disk. This way you will not have to move your files and also all the installed programs will not require reinstalling.

How do I restore all applications that I have as well as my movies, music and pictures, because one morning when I switch my laptop on everything was just gone.

can you click on the file to try and open it. If you can then you may need to reload the program that is associated with it. If it won't run an antivirus scan of your system but don't rely on Norton or McAfee. I use AVAST because it will find things that the other 2 won't find. After that if it still doesn't work try running an Antimalware program. As a last resort if all that doesn't work try copying the files off and reload your system but remember 1 thing get a good Anti Virus program on that system before you put your file back onto your system to hopefully catch a virus if 1 or more file are infected I would run an Anti virus scan on the system just before you put those files back on.

How to turn off RAT

The only solution for a virus-infected computer is to backup all your "data" (files, folders, pictures, bookmarks, E-mail contacts & messages) and then reinstall Windows from "trusted" media, run Windows Update, install an anti-virus, and reload your data.

Anything "less" is less than a 100% "solution".

Hi, ive got a dell note book and all i want to do is reset it like if i where to just get it brand new. because its too slow and a pain in the ****

Hi ellisti...
Instead of doing a format first, try this:

Double left click on "Start">All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> System Restore...Pick a date when your computer was fast and running right.
This will restore your computer back to an earlier time when it was working good.

If it still doesn't work then you will Double left click on "My Computer"> right click on C drive (if that is your main drive) and then choose "Format"...this will wipe everything from the hard drive including the operating system, drivers, all files you have added, so make sure you save to an external hard drive all the files, pictures, etc you want to keep.
You will have to reload the operating system, and drivers to be back to like new operation.

My laptop can't start Windows. The auto fix is not working and it says I don't have a prior restore point. I'm thinking I will need a new laptop, but figured I'd try posting this first.

> I think that I will need a new laptop.

All you need to do is to "backup" your files (E-mail, contacts, music, picture) to some external device, e.g., USB memory-stick or CD/DVD-writer.

Then, reinstall Windows, using the original set of "System Restore" CD/DVD disks,
install an anti-virus, run Windows Update several files, and reload your files.

Or, any computer-store will do the above, and charge you $50 to $100.

Definitely *NOT* (yet) the time to purchase a new computer!

Need to reload my drivers

To reload your drivers you will have to reload the entire operating system and here is how to do so.

Back up all of your user files, because reloading the operating system will destroy all of your data. You can use an external hard drive, thumb drive or an online backup service to save your files.

Insert the restore CD that came with your computer, then restart your PC. The computer will automatically boot and begin the restoration. You will be asked to confirm the reformatting of your hard drive during the process. The restore CD will not only reload the operating system but all of the hardware drivers as well. (If you do not have the restore CD, contact your computer's manufacturer.)

Insert the operating system CD if you do not have access to a restore CD. Shut down the computer and restart it. The computer will boot from the CD, and when the operating system menu is displayed, you will have the option to reload the operating system files. If you take this approach, you might also need to reload the drivers for your hardware by going to each manufacturer's website and downloading a driver for each device.

How do I wipe my hard drive? It has been hit by a virus and most of the programs no longer work. I need to clean the hard drive and reload it. Do I need to format it first?

You can perform a clean install. When you are asked if you want to reformat , say YES. That way all will be erased, and the virus also.

Hoe it helps

Hey there, viruses are usually pretty easy to clean up. Go to the following link and save the file to your desktop. Restart your computer, hold in F8 as soon as it powers back on. This will take you to a screen that will enable you to start in safe mode. Select safe mode, when the desktop opens, click yes in the window, then install the file you saved (malwarebytes). Once installed, run a full scan, it will find a the files for the virus, then click on repair. You should be good to go. Let me know if you need anything else.

System not functioning in my laptop?

Obviously, you want to save files from the computer; any files transferred to another system could infect that system.

If you really need those files I would recommend downloading an Ubuntu ISO and burning it to a CD. This gives you to boot to an operating system from a Compact Disc.

Ubuntu Linux has the ability to browse the Windows hard drive, if needed, transfer the files off the partition. You can burn the files from Ubuntu, if you have two Disc Drives, move the files on to a Flash Drive, or you can transfer them across your home network. Beware, this can spread the damage to other systems that do not have active virus protection.
Seriously, you need Norton, McAfee, or AVG Free at the least; these programs can intercept virus like activity as it happens in the memory. Furthermore, a script blocker like Noscript, Ad-aware, or MS Windows Defender can help prevent Spyware/Trojans/Variants from installing when you browse a untrusted site.

Once you have backed up the files you want to save you'll need to use your system recovery disc to format the hard drive and reinstall the operating system on your laptop.
