Question about Brother MFC 7420 All-In-One Laser Printer

1 Answer

A 1/4" vertical gray line off center prints on copies and faxes

It's a light gray line that has letters in it like this:

AT
IO
EN
that repeat several times aboiut 2.5" apart. Above and below the letters are curved lines, almost like a postmark. I cleaned the glass, and changed both the toner cartridge and the drum. Where is this coming from??!

The guy who helped me yesterday said that it was the fuser. A fuser costs $132.50 for a replacement. I ordered a replacement machine (refurbished, but with a full warranty) for $79.98. Thank you, though.

Chances are that its coming from your heat roller. if you open rear cover and look closely, you will see a unit with an orange colored lower roller, and the upper one is your heat roller. if you inspect upper roller, you should see the defect. its a teflon coated roller and sounds like teflon has worn off. you will have to have that replaced.

Some lines are missing when receiving faxes

Horizontal or vertical? Or do you mean lines of text?
Did you try to copy a document? If the copy is fine, then the fault is on the sending side, or there are severe transmission errors.
If the copy exhibits the same faults as the received faxes, then something is wrong with the printing part of your fax, and solving the problem will depend on the printing technology used (inkjet - clogged heads, need cleaning, or empty ink, needs replacing etc.)

Sounds like the scanner led head. Try to look in under the scanner when doing a copy to see if it is fully lit, can be a pig to rplace, some brother parts are not too expensive but you will need an engineer to order it and fit it

Line almost straight down center when receiving fax

if you try a internal print such as a report does it go away? if so its more lucky the person sending you the fax.

if you print a report and its on there i would check the ribbon and look for marks, also it could be a transfer problem causing these marks.

Hope this gives you a starts

look for a corona wire, close to the drum
  1. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the tab from right to left several times.
  2. Return the tab and snap it into the home position.

If the tab is not at the home position, printed pages may have vertical stripes.

Black line on my fax copies!

You sure can - the issue is that there is something on the thin strip of glass where the copy goes through from the feeder at the top - follow these directions and you should clear the problem right up.
