Entire photo isn't focused

Just about any photo editing program should be able to crop your picture. If cropping isn't enough to get rid of unwanted background elements then most photo editing programs also offer some kind of cloning tool so you can make those elements disappear into the background.

Try resetting your camera back to factory defaults. Press the MENU button, select the middle tools tab and scroll down to RESET ALL. Press SET, select OK and press SET. Hope this helps.

There are three main reasons photos don't come out clear.
The first is focus. If your photo has something in the near foreground and something in the distant background, you may not get both in focus. This is not as much of a problem with compact point&shoot cameras simply because their field of focus is so deep.
The second cause is subject motion. If you take a photo of a moving object, that object may blur. This is the case if moving objects blur but still objects do not.
The third and main cause is camera motion. If you suspect this, try placing the camera on a table or other stable surface, use the self-timer, and take a photo. Compare this photo with one you take holding the camera.

The camera is defective. But as you've only had the camera three months it still is under warranty. Canon is usually very responsive to these type of problems and will bend over backwards to make things right (probably the most responsive of the camera companies).

This setting employs a slow shutter speed, the camera should be stabilized to avoid camera shake resulting in a blurred picture. Landscape + Portrait Suitable for taking photos of both your subject and the landscape. This setting allows for both the foreground subject and background landscape to be in focus. The camera automatically sets the optimal shooting conditions. Self Portrait Enables you to take a picture of yourself while holding the camera. Point the lens towards yourself and the focus will be locked on you. The camera automatically sets the optimal shooting conditions. The zoom is locked to wide-angle and cannot be changed. Indoor Optimum settings for taking pictures of family gatherings and groups of friends. This mode reproduces the background clearly capturing the atmosphere. Beach Suitable for taking photos at the beach under a bright blue sky. Colors of the sky, the beach and people are reproduced vividly. Snow Optimun settings for taking pictures where backgrounds are snow fields. Settings are similar to Beach settings and colors of the sky, the greenery and people are reproduced vividly.
