Question about Brother Multi-Function Center MFC-8870DW All-In-One Laser Printer

Can't print in color

We just got a Brother MFC-8870DW Printer. We can not print in color. I can't find any setting to take it back from grayscale. We just got it and I am unfamiliar with this printer. I want to check and see if the color ink cartridge is even in the printer but I don't know how or where to look. Also, I can't find the setting on the computer to put the printer to grayscale and back again. Maybe it is set to grayscale and I just can't find it?

Ummm...its a black and white copier/printer. the only thing it may do in color, is scan to your computer. if you just got it, you may want to browse through the owners manual because you're going to have to know how to change toner, drum, remove jams, etc.

good luck,
razors

I have a all in one color LC61 printer, do all colors have to be filled to print blk only?

Greyscale is color not black only.
You can print in black and it will look grayscale only darker, printers are a pain to work with after a year has gone by, I can expect almost a half hour to print something with my $400 epson because one of the colors is out even though I never printed in the last year a colored page. I take the color cartirges out and they are empty, but I only print a page 2-3 times a year. I use the scanner all the time. Brother and epson have their print heads in the printer not the cartridge so make sure your inks are always have something in it or it will be miricle for the printer to last more than a year. Check colors every other week. One Epson printer only lasted 3 months because I never used it(print head dried up). Never use the set up with tubes running outside printer to small tanks of ink if you only use it occationally.

I have a MFC 490CW brother Printer I want to print B/W copies only I change the preference to grayscale but still does not print

Hi there,
That's the correct thing that you need to do, setting the printer preferences to GRAYSCALE. If that doesn't work you can also try printing document using a different/another application (example: Microsoft Word, Excel), because sometimes the setting of an application overrides the setting of the printer driver.
The last option for this issue is to uninstall and reinstall the printer driver.
Hope this helps. Rate if it works. Thanks

The black cartridge (Brother LC51) doesn't print on my Brother MFC 685CW. The other 3 cartridges print just fine and passed the Print Quality Check. Running clean cycle doesn't help

In order to print in Black and White using grayscale, you will need to adjust the printing preferences within the driver. To change the printer properties complete the following steps:

1. Open the Printers Folder:

  • Windows 2000: Click Start => Settings => Printers.

  • Windows XP: Click Start => Printers and Faxes.

  • Windows Vista: Click the Start button => Control Panel => Hardware and Sound => Printers.

  • Windows 7: Click the Start button => Devices and Printers.

2. Right click on the Brother printer driver and left click Printing Preferences.

3. Click the Advanced tab.

4. Select Grayscale.

5. Click APPLY => OK. Your printer will now print in grayscale.

Only want grayscale or non color as my default printing

You have to change the printer settings to greyscale (2. chapter of the settings) each time you run a b/w print.

See here what you have to do, too:
