Can you tell me more about the error message you receive? PRINTER.EXE is reported as harmfull software and is not made by Microsoft nor supplied with windows 98 as it is rogue harmfull software.

Are you using windows 98 or are you using windows 98 start up diskette - dos and you want to print from the Dos`?

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

What is best website to show me dos programming examples.. want to creat an exe file to pick up text files from a directory and send them to a printer whenever a new file appears .(without pc...

you mean a .bat file that can be run when a new file is added. let me see if i can find a good site for you.
http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~ak621/DOS/BatBasic.html
My advice is get a good book! One that stands out in my mind is "The Waite Group's MS-DOS Bible" (1991?) This will take you through using the command shell and batch files through how the DOS filesystem is structured, memory managment under DOS, an explaination of how the OS loads a program up to wrting little progams of you own using machine language and debug.
Another great book is Dan Gookin's "Advanced MS-DOS Batch File Programming" that will also teach you something about operating systems in general in a nice, unformal tone.
DOS also comes with a BASIC interpreter called QBASIC, that can teach you the funamentals of programming while augmenting your shell scripts and doing things that plain batch files just can't do.

The printer cannot be set to a page length when printing from a dos program. The page length is incorrect but changes with every print even though the same file is printed

Prints from DOS programs do not have a "page length" setting of their own, nor do dot matrix printer have a page length of their own.

Page feed is achieved by sending a special control code (^L), and the meaning of ^L can be set through specific escape codes that the DOS program has to know.

My guess is that you need to tell the DOS program the page size in lines or inches, and maybe instruct it to send a page feed command after each page.

You can try directly programming the printer, but if the DOS program is sending out the wrong codes, this is not going to help. Anyway, here goes. Good luck!

Print from DOS

Try Start --> Programs --> MS DOS

or Start --> Run --> enter CMD

this will take you to a DOS screen

To print a file use the type command and pipe it to LPT1
e.g. type myfile.log > lpt1

Install Xp From Dos

If XP will not install from the CD or if you have a new drive with no operating system onit yet try these:

Install Windows XP from the hard drive with Windows 98 already installed:

Boot Windows 98
Insert the XP CD into your CD reader
Explore Windows XP through My Computer
Copy i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder and double click on winnt32.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive

Install Windows XP from DOS (ie. no OS on a new hard drive):

Boot with a Windows 98 Start Up disk
Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD reader
Run smartdrv.exe from the Win98 directory on the windows 98 CD (file caching)
Type cd.. to back up to the root directory
Insert Windows XP CD into the CD reader
Copy the i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder on C: and type winnt.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive.

Not working

Do a file search for cmd.exe and then you can create a shortcut on your desktop pointing to it and then in double quotes put the location of the application you are trying to execute, ie.. It should be located on c:\windows\system32 - cmd.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe - in Properties Target and put this in double quotes and then your application with the full path in double quotes after that.

Printing from Dos Prompt

1. Save your text file (.txt).

2. On the command prompt navigate to that directory

3.Type "Lpr -S 192.168.1.200 -P lp text.txt"

Substitute 192.168.1.200 for your copier's ip

Substitute text.txt to filename.

Or you can: to print from MS-DOS apps.

1. Share the printer on a networked windows computer. Make sure you make the name MS-DOS compatible.

2. At a DOS prompt, type the following command:
"net use lpt1: \\servername\printer_share/persistent:yes"

NOTE Servername=computer name

printer_share=printers share name
