Power Book G4 reinstall using Power Book G5 OS X10.4.6
I had a Power Book G4 OS X 10.3 then try to reinstall using G5 OS 10.4.6 which I get from my friend. I connect laptop with desk top G5 computer through fire wire. It appears on desktop as external HD, so I erase them all. Disconnect and install the OS DVD, then I can not install. Here is message on my screen. ''panic (cpu 0 caller 0x002E00F4): Unable to find driver for this platform: ''PowerBook5,4''. The computer used to be fine before. Can you help me out? It is for my daughter uses now. Than you. Could be your browser and/or Mac OS version. The G4s and even G5 Power PC Macs could only run operating systems up to 10.5.8. Minimum OS for running the latest versions of browsers, such as Safari and Firefox is 10.6. under the Intel chipset. Because the old browsers are slow, sites like Facebook and Google do not always support them.
OS 10.5.8 is more compatible than, let's say OS 10.4.9. Check your OS by going to About This Mac under the apple logo on the left side of the screen. It will tell you what your OS is. Your choices: Upgrade your OS to 10.5.8 or take a giant leap to an Intel Mac and run OS 10.6.8 or later. Eventually your old G4 will not be able to connect to anything because of the browser issues.
I have not been able to find any full retail versions from apple. I have found them on ebay and amazon. They are expensive and I do not have any more good disks with it. I found that the best os for g4 ppc macs is 10.4.11 but 10.5 will work on G4 867 and faster. I did not get much happiness from 10.5 on any G4.
So the rule of thumb I use is, 10.4 on G4 and 10.5 on G5 and up
We had the same problem with a G5 version of the dl380, no video at boot or OS boot. This model fortunately had another video out on the front panel that worked. However, I believe that the G4 does not have that option coupled with using the Rage XL's from ATI for video. Have you tried installing another video card into the expansion slots for video? If you are able to, you may find that when you run your smartstart and load/reload the OS your video will work with the onboard.
Sorry, but the G4 and G5 desktops have chipsets released prior to the Intel agreement allowing pc's with CoreDuo and Macs with DualCore chips to exchange data, even though Virtual PC for G3 through G5 chipsets did work in running MS OS's prior to Vista, including XP, on mac platforms.
Now, if this helps, you might be able to secure an older version of Virtual PC, since your version works on current Macs and PCs with Vista, to run XP on your G4 and G5.
