Question about Computers & Internet

I have a co worker who's son's laptop wont turn on when the power adapter is plugged in, when its unplugged, it will turn on but not off. He said his son was told that it was a problem with the hard drive, what areas dealing with the hard drive will keep the computer from booting when the power adapter is in use and not power off when its not in use? Never dealt with this type of situation before

It is not the hard drive. It may be a bad DC connector on the system board, that is loose, and he is running on the battery.

Hi there. It sounds more like a power board problem.
There are a couple of ways to check the hard drive, though. One is to take the hard drive out, and see if this still happens. A computer will still turn on without the hard drive connected, as the BIOS runs from a chip and the RAM. As you say that they can still run the laptop with it not plugged in, there is a program that they can download that will test the drive.

Here is the link:
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=seatools-win&vgnextoid=552bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

Get them to download and install the program, and see what the results are.

Hope that helps.

I had a co-worker bring me his Asus A55a laptop that would not power on. The problem turned out to be the small power control board right under the power button. The parts was only $15.00 plus shipping. The local geek shop wanted $180.00 ( 3 weeks turn around time).

Turn on the laptop without the battery, using only the AC adapter. If doesn't work remove the AC Adapter and battery. Hold down the power button for 30-45 seconds then plugged in the AC Adapter and put battery back in then [on]

Laptop is turning on and off

Remove the AC adapter (Charger)

PROPER method is to disconnect the power cord of the AC adapter, from power; THEN unplug the AC adapter from the laptop.

Same thing in reverse to plug the AC adapter back in.
AC adapter is plugged into laptop, THEN AC adapter is plugged into power.

Unplugging the AC adapter from the laptop, while being plugged into power; can cause a Voltage Spike.

You may get away with it for years, and several laptops; and have no problems.

However it only takes ONCE, to fry out the SMD fuses, Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors, and Power MOSFET's, on the laptop motherboard's DC to DC circuit.

Jus sayin'.

Moving on........

AC adapter removed, remove the Battery.
Press the Power On button in, and hold in for a count of 10 seconds.
Let go.
Do this procedure 2 more times.

(Draining residual power)

Reinstall the Battery. Attach the AC adapter, plug AC adapter into power. Let the Battery charge 24 hours.
Then turn the laptop on, and tell me what happened.

Power problems

Unplug the AC adapter (Charger) from power. Unplug the AC adapter from the laptop.
Remove the Battery.

Press the Power On button in, and hold it in for a count of 10 seconds.
(And I mean 10. Count, 1001,..1002,..1003,..etc)

Reinstall the Battery. Plug the AC adapter back in. Plug the AC adapter into power.

(ALWAYS plug the AC adapter into the laptop FIRST, then plug the AC adapter into power.
Why?
To avoid a voltage spike at the laptop)

WAIT 1 minute, turn the laptop on.

Still no?

Then the AC adapter needs to be checked, to see if it is putting out the correct voltage.

Don't know, Model Number wasn't stated.

AC adapter checks out, then it is on to the DC Power Jack.
The jack on the laptop (DC_IN) that the AC adapter plugs into.
What style?

Don't know the Model Number wasn't stated.

DC Power Jack checks out, then I suggest you have a problem with a Power MOSFET,

(Model Number is on the Bottom of the laptop. Plus, this IS a Dell, right?)

Post back in a Comment.

The laptop wont turn on. i have unpluged it, taken out the battery then replace it after 60 sec. tried to turn it on and it didnt work. i plugged it back in waited about 5 min and it still wont turn on....

This sounds like a motherboard problem, unplug computer and remove main battery and leave it out. Now plug in power adapter, press power, if no! remove the hard drive, power up to see if you get a screen prompt, If no! remove one stick of ram, if no! remove the second stick and make sure you put back the first one, if yes! the stick in your hand is bad, if no! there is a motherboard issue. If all this fails put everything back except the battery and power supply, next hold down the power button for 40 seconds, after that time install battery and power adapter and press power "this is a last ditch effort"

  1. First, turn your Router off and wait for a couple of minutes (unplug power from the wall)
  2. Turn off your modem (unplug power from the wall)
Reboot both the devices and they will obtain a new IP address.

Let me know.

Post means if you see the dell logo, remove the battery, plug the ac if still it wont turn on or doesnt have any light,Reseat the Memory if after reseatting the memory still the same problem it might be a bad motherboard.

My charger won't work so now my computer wont turn on

Unplug you ac adapter from the wall and plug a lamp in to verify that the wall plug is working correctly. Pick up the adapter to see if it feels warm. Most adapters will feel warmer than room temperature if they are working,
If the cords on your adapter can be unplugged from the adapter, reseat them. Try the ac adapter in another wall plug to see if it comes on. The adapter may have an LED on it that indicates whether or not it is on. If it doesn't, about the only way to check it is to use a multimeter to see if there is any voltage on the plug that goes into the back of the laptop. If something else will work in the original wall plug and the adapter won't work in another wall plug, you will need to obtain another ac adapter.
Once you've tried these things, let me know and we'll go from there.
Thanks!
