My RCA 27F520T turns itself on and off after it has been on for a little while. I cannot find a resolution and have had 0 response from RCA. I purchased this TV from WalMart less than 2 years ago but unfortunately it is now out of warrantee and I was told to contact RCA.

Any suggestions on how to fix?

SOMETIMES IT HAPPENS RIGHT AWAY OTHER TIMES IT WILL WORK FOR DAYS.IN THE END IT ENDS WITH THAT SAME RESULT. I HAVE TRIED PUTTING BIGGER FUSES BEEFED UP SOME OF THE POWER WIRES CHANGING THE POWER SWITCH. HAS ANYBODY TRIED ANYTHING FARTHER IN DEPTH THAT I MAY BE OVERLOOKING IF SO PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

turns on and off by itself

Tv turns off whenever it decides too. Could be after 5 minute, could be after 5 hours, could be after 5 weeks... summer, winter, spring, fall, it doesn't matter. Seems like a design flaw to me if, as someone suggested, it is overheating. Started doing this after about a year of owning it.

Check vertical output section getting more heat. Due to this section also cause on and off problem. You will not mentioned in sound side. During this condition you get the sound or not. Check the audio supply voltage also.

My rca trueflat goes on and off by its self

Check its main power supply regualtor section circuit board for any loose solder terminals. Resolder suspected solder terminals by applying little more fresh solder.

Tv turns on and goes off right away and it goes on and off on and off

Hi Jack,

This is an indication of out-of-regulation in the power supply section. The very common caused of this fault is the leaky electrolytic capacitor in that section. It will drop the supply from normal voltage and will disable the unit. Sometimes it has a bulged/dome at the top but not all, it is better that you have a capacitor checker/tester to determine its condition. Also, bad solder joints can produce the same symptom, it is hard to spot, you should use table lamp/portable lamp for finding the cold solder. Once isolated the faulty capacitor and resoldered the bad solder joints your unit will back to normal again

If you don't have necessary tools and test instruments, and can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the problem. Don't attempt to work in the power supply if you don't know the safety precaution of handling it, there some stored electricity enough to hurt you with a little mistake only.

Also check if your unit is under warranty /extended warranty, avail it because the manufacturer of your unit will fix it for free. Don't open the back panel, this will void the warranty.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for using Fixya.

Why does it power off on it's own? I've checked to make sure all the timers are off.

loose connection on power supply , u would have to open tv and do solder connection on the flyback transformer , this transformer is easy to located because that part is big and black and u would see one cable goes to the picture tube that flyback has loose connection need to bo solder

My RCA console tv has white horizontal lines accross screen, picture is very light and sound is ok, very frustrating. I know its an old tv, but appreciate any response. Thanks

Cold solder joints on the flyback transformer circuit board - probably because RCA used feed-thru steel rivets on their boards. Re-solder the connections using a good solder flux for clean solder joints and this will fix prob. The joints with the dull, pitted finish are the problem joints.

Power light is on but have no picture or sound

My thoughts are that there may be a cracked soldering joint somewhere to which the TV shows like it''s powered on but doesn't allow for the CRT to come on.
When you power the TV on to you still hear the rush or quish noise of the high voltage from the flyback?

I have an RCA Truflat that began turning itself off today. Sometimes it will last 20 minutes, sometimes a few seconds. I'm broke..no way can I get it repaired..any ideas as to what's going on?

possible cold solder joint(loose connection). try the old method of picking it up and slightly moving it. hit it. if it seems to affect operation, just simple soldering on power supply and deflection will fix it. 50/50 chance

The tv keeps shutting off just after minutes of turning it on. We can wait about 5-10 min before turning it on again but then it only stays on for a few minutes.

This sounds like a heat related problem, which could be a faulty chip or a cold (bad) solder joint on one of the PCBs (printed circuit boards). Due to the lethal voltages present inside a CRT type television, it is strongly advised to have this repaired by a qualified technician. however, if you or someone you know is technically inclined, you can try to fix this yourself. Cold solder joints can often be spotted by visible cracks in the solder joints. a through inspection of all the boards could easily identify the problem which can be resolved with a quick tap with a soldering iron and perhaps a little extra solder added to the joint. if that yields nothing, another method is heat/cold stressing the boards while the TV is running. With the TV on, spray small areas of the PCBs with cold spray (or a can of compressed air duster turned upside down) until the tv shuts off. then heat the last sprayed part with a hot air gun (or a hair dryer) until you can get the problem to repeat regularly. inspect the area causing the problem and you will probably find the culprit.

RCA TV turn on and off after warm up

very simple as it comes on after some times means all your parts are perfectly ok. it comes to stand by mode due to 1 loose contact in power supply . 2 if it is ok the problem in hori section but loose contact only as you have already said that it comes on itself. good luck
