Question about Kenmore HE2 Plus Front Load Washer
Stops numerous times during the rinse and drain section - tried manual tricks but nothing working
Other posts on this site address the issue of the flashing lights on the Kenmore HE, saying that your first step is to check the filter behind the front foot panel. (The manual nowhere mentions this hard-to-find but easy-to-empty device.) Our filter certainly needed to be emptied...we found over $7 in change packed in there.
But in our case, emptying the filter did not stop the lights from flashing. We called the Sears technician and paid $129 for him to tell us that we needed a new motherboard computer. Those cost $255, which puts us in the market for a new machine. How to avoid buying another machine that only lasts 3 years?
Instead of Sears or a big box store, we then went to a local appliance store, shabby in appearance but a place where the salesmen are also repairmen. We learned that if you want a durable machine that lasts 10 years or more, don't consider a front loader or a machine with computers (the Kenmore HE has 3 different computers, each of which can fail). Sure, there are no guarantees that any machine will last 10 years, but at least the local appliance stores have people who are allowed to give you advice over the phone after your warranty runs out. Our salesman claimed to save four problems a day over the phone, and said he laughed at people who insist on front loaders. "The more parts you have, the more parts can break," as he said. By the way, top loaders don't need a filter like the front loaders do.
How do you get a washer to last 10 years if you can't spend more than $600? Buy a loud-*** machine with a stainless steel tub, be careful not to overload it, and empty pockets before you load, especially of nails or things small enough to fit through the holes in the sides of the tub.
What is that loud, clunky sound you hear coming from the laundry room? That could be the sweet sound of affordability and durability. (We looked at Maytag and Speed Queen top loaders.)
