Question about i-mate Pocket PC

1 Answer

Restore information Hi! I lost all the information tonight on my imate pocket pc due to the battery running out. I removed that battery thinking that I would save the 20mins of backup battery and it would be ok once I recardged it when I finally made it home. I put the battery back in and put it on to charge and when it started it took me though the set up steps again. I then tried to restore via my memory card, it got 3/4 of the way though and gave me an error message. From there I lost all my programs too. I now can't even access my xbackup program that was on there all I have is games. I don't sync with the computer as we have just moved and the computer hasn't been set up for it yet plus I forgot to bring the disc with me. Please HELP! I have jsut lost about 10 years worth of info.

Hi Again. I appologise for not getting back to you sooner but I wanted to wait for my husband to come home before I follwed your instructions to make sure it was done right, I'm afraid i'll stuff it up and ruin my chances of getting my info back. Anyway, we have just tried it and this is what it gave me.........Unhandled exception has occured in your application. If you click Continue the application will ignoe this error & attempt to continue. If you click Quit the application will close immediately................Illegal characters in path:

Have I run out of options?

I really appreciate all you help.

I can understand you very well since I use a PDA also and this battery problem is an issue for me too. I assume that your backup file is in your storage card and is a standalone exe file (means you don't need your backup software being installed first to start a recovery process). You can remove your storage card from your PDA first and back it up to a PC to ensure that your only backup file is safe. Next, you can do another hard reset to your PDA and do all the settings steps again. After that, you can try to recover some of your data by starting the recovery process and performing not a full backup, but just the necessary data first. I am recommending this step because you have a PDA that's main storage area is very limited (like mine) and if you are normally using it filled up, backup process can be terminated before it finishes because of the backup file is nearly equal to the total main storage area,  and this causes your device to stop working even after your incomplete recovering process. This is mainly becuase recovering process needs lots of space and when the process is near the end, it can't have enough space on main storage area to continue. So, you can try to recover the necessary data first (Softwares, contacts, appointments, ...), then, if it is successfull, you can open your backup file again and this time you can select the other personal documents that has been left in the first process. (I hope your backup software supports selecting the needed data to recover.)

Ok then, here is another solution for you: Transfer your only backup file (created with xBackup) to your PC, then use ->This Link<- to download the small windows application (created by a helpfull programmer Werner Ruotsalainen) for recovering your data. And to recover your data, just start the application; give it the path of your backup file. The application will extract all the files in the backup file in a newly created subdirectory. I hope this will solve your problem.

Hi. Did you manage to restore your data with the helper application?

Hmm, I see. Because the software you used to backup is xBackup, this is the application to unpack the file (it's a non offical application as I said). In the other backup softwares (like Sprite Backup, SPB Backup) there is also a tool for unpacking you backed-up data in windows environment, you can give them a try to unpack your backup file also. Also, you can try to rename your backup file to a simpler one like "backup" to avoid illegal chracter issue, but it may be giving that error because there's a file using a character which that application could not handle. You can try to use that application again wtih renaming your backup file, and maybe you can try to use the application in Windows XP (if you're using Vista). I hope this will help..

Hi iam fayzan khan i hav also the same problem

This has been observed in many Pocket PCs.
This happens due to the fact that your old battery is not ablle to provide as much as power as your PPC wants, hence turns OFF.
I suggest that you check your battery, cause it may be faulty.

Wet screen IMate pocket PC

* completely turn off the device * remove the battery * take a cotton cloth * hit it for some time, not very hot * press your mobiles screen with the cotton for 2/3 min, do it for 4/5 times, if no luck escalate it to vendor and don't tell them it is because of water drop otherwise warranty will be void. thanks Arun
