Question about Dell Dimension 3100 PC Desktop

1 Answer

When I turn the hard drive on it beeps 6 times intermittently and doesnt boot up as normal. The monitor is switched on but there is no picture. I tried another monitor with my hard drive and that worked fine, so it is definately a problem with the hard drive. What do you think the problem might be? Please can you help me Kathryn

Unplug power from the machine for a period of 5-10 minutes.

Plug it back in and attempt to boot. Carefully notice if there are any beeps again, and listen for pauses in between. Dell beep codes go in a three pulse pattern I.E. 4-Slight Pause-4-Slight Pause-2-Pause/ and repeat.

After this, you may have to open your machine and assure that everything is well connected.

There is a chance however that a major system component has failed and needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

Are you Sure that the computer model is Dell Optiplex GX260? Because looking at the manual diagnostic lights are found at the back. and the fault can be determine If the ABCD lights are yellow or green. But None the less 2/3 Depicts a hard drive problem while 3/4 depicts a memory issue.

Hard drive Issue:

1. Disconnect all non essential cables at the back of the computer. Leave only the mouse, monitor and keyboard. See if it boots up normally
2. If it boot up fine. try plugging one peripheral at a time until you find which peripheral causes the computer not to POST (Power on Self Test)
3. If you still getting problems, Follow these steps
4. To access the BIOS you must tap F2 or delete key upon turning the computer on
5. Try to look for the Hard drive if it is detected by BIOS if not got to step 9
6. Look for Boot Sequence or anything that is associated Boot
7. The Order boot of must be 1st: DVD Drive, 2nd: Hard drive, 3rd: Network etc.
8. Save the changes and Restart
9. If you still get the same message I suggest that you take out the hard drive and put it back in until it is detected in BIOS
10. If Step 9 did not work I think you need to replace the Hard drive

Memory Issue:

1. Open the chassis of the computer
2. Try taking out all memory modules
3. Rub the metal contacts of all memory with a pencil eraser
4. If more than one memory. Put one memory first and turn the computer on. If it turned on add another memory and turn the computer on. Repeat these steps until you determine which memory is faulty or all memory module contacts needs cleaning

the beeps are post during post the very first work is done by the ram,all the memory in the ram is first transferred to the hard disk, and remains active untill turned off.
make sure that your RAM is securely seated
try replacing all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
hope this helps

Has anything changed since it was working last? check that first
Next -- the Beep codes indicate a hardware problem --the PC was unable to POST(Power On Self Test-)-but DELL's beep codes closest to what you described is either 1-2-video card not detected or 1-3-1-1 which is Memory (RAM) error adn the PHEONIX beep code of 1-3-2 is Memory error also-- so be sure all cards and chips are seated properly--I dont think its the hardrive --a PC can still boot and POST without a hardrive.

Gateway MT3705 Not booting up

Try taking out the hard drive and see if the pc will boot to the BIOS, if not....pull the memory from the pc or try a stick at a time and see if you can at least get to BIOS...if not most likely you have a MOBO issue.

its either a problem with a memory "ram" or the graphic chip. changing the ram would solve it, if not a graphic chip can not be fixed.

Tecra M2 doesn't boot is it a processor problem?

given the symptoms, it points to motherboard.. if it was processor, video or ram. it wouldnt boot at all and you'd just get error beeps from your laptop. i'd first try resetting the bios, by removing the bios battery for 30 min, then putting it back in. if that doesnt work try changing it out, usually costs under 8 bucks. if that doesnt work then I would change out the motherboard, if its cost effective.

tricky!! oh hi im Dyanne.. a totally unresponsive black screen can be th result of failure of th LCD or LCD inverter.( a specialized piece of electronics that energize th screen) to rule out th failure of th video display adapter or circuitry, try plugging in an external monitor..a standard pc monitor.. attached direct to th lappy. if it works, (as i susopect) th motherboard and video display are both working ok and its th LCD which is at fault. this can sometimes be repaired by a competent specialist. good luck xx

System crash--won't boot up

The intermittent beeping is the error code. It is important that you notice how many beeps your computer makes.
Then, you can go to the following link (from HP) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07107&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=71010&lang=en
and check what is wrong with your computer.

Anyway, you can always recover the information on your computer, but will have to take the hard disk out of the computer and plug it onto another as a secondary hard disk.
