The washing machine motor kicks for the spin cycle

The washing machine motor kicks in for the spin cycle and runs for 10 secs or so and then stops. After a minute or so, it starts up again for another 10 secs and then kicks off. The motor will run in the slow spin cycle mode, but not with clothes in it (it kicks off). I have tried replacing the motor, but the new motor did the same thing. So this is not overload issue. The rubber coupling is fine. The last expert suggested replacing the motor capacitor. I did that and it didn't solve the problem. Seems like the overload switch or some fuse is too sensitive or sensing the wrong input. This is a Kenmore Elite model -11024962300-I am a stubborn mechanical engineer, so I'm willing to try again, but I want to be confident that I'm doing the right thing this time. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I replaced the capacitor and that didn't do it. So how do I test the relay. Please send details about how to daignose this problem. Note that I'm not an electrician. The motor is definately shutting down due to a faulty signal.

  • johnwizz Apr 13, 2009

Anyone know why this motor won't run properly?

  • johnwizz Apr 13, 2009

It's not the motor - I tried replacing the motor. Please read my description carefully.

  • johnwizz Apr 14, 2009

Motor controller? Not sure, is that likely, and if so how do I fix it. If not, what else could it be?

  • johnwizz Apr 14, 2009

I ran the new motor while it was disconnected from the drive and it cut out just like I described, so it's NOT the drive system. So what is it?

  • johnwizz Apr 14, 2009

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Reply if you understand what this problem is.

  • johnwizz Apr 14, 2009

Nope, it's not the transmission. Please read carefully. How can I get in touch with a live qualified Kenmore service guy?

Hi,
u must replace transmission. To replace the transmission, all of this must be done: cabinet off, agitator and spacer clips (1 metal, 1 plastic) out, pump off, motor off. Then there are 3 bolts that secure the transmission to the chassis. Tip the machine on an angle to the back, remove the 3 bolts, and the transmission will pull straight out. The new transmission will not come with the motor mounting plate, coupler, or clutch. These parts must be transferred from the old transmission. To remove the clutch, lift off the round metal washer at the base of the output shaft. Then remove the "E" clip and then pry out the wire-looking clip (loose end first) from the inside edge of the 4 tabs. The clutch will now lift off; make sure to retain the plastic insert. Reinstall the parts in the reverse order on the new transmission. Clear the breather hole in the top of the transmission (arrow pointing to it) with a needle or straightened paper clip. Transfer motor mount plate (I usually re-install it upside down from the way it was on the old tranny) and install the new coupler. Gently tap the coupler onto the input shaft until it is flush (I use a ratchet extension so as not to break the coupler with the hammer). Apply small amount of grease to output shaft and slide back into chassis. Assemble in reverse order from this point. Make sure to reinstall the plastic and metal spacer clips before installing the agitator. Once cabinet is back on and machine is back in place, lift the back of the machine up and down to reset the rear leveling legs. Any further questions are certainly welcome.

Somewhere on the new motor you installed there is a amp/volt sticker. you should find it and check the amps with a clamp on meter. if thats not an option, take the coupler off and run it with no load, if it works the transmission is messed up, let me know what happens

did some more research and this one does have a motor controller that looks for certain loads during the cycles. i don't know why they have to make a washer as complicated as a new car. kenmore does have a good tech support, but it's going to take all day to get a hold of a smart one.

There is a motor controller in the washing machine that makes the motor run and stop.if that motor controller is faulty this problem happens.its bit techical to do the reparing manually.as it requires a professional repair person.as where it is located that is mentioned in the link.if you are quite able to use the multimeters and soldering irons.you can do it your self.

http://www.electronicsforu.com/electronicsforu/lab/ad.asp?url=/EFYLinux/circuit/sep2003/cir-5-washing.pdf&title=Washing%20Machine%20Motor%20Controller
as the reparing cost is negligible.so its worth getting it repaired. thanks.keep updated.

It sounds like a bad motor, overload is inside motor assembly and is not sold as separate part.

Motor can also be tested by energizing it directly. Also check the motor ground connection is not failing with vibration, shortly after starting.
You can also read voltages to the motor, if they cut down, then check wiring harness, motor control unit if present, and timer board.
More likely the problem is the motor, overloading in ten seconds and cutting down, if voltages are good usually you have to replace the motor.

Washing machines kick off when they're out of balance, like if something is too heavy and waterlogged on one side. Redistribute the laundry and it will be fine.

Washing machine will not engage drum in wash or spin mode

it sounded like the brushes have gone but you said you replaced them right? usually when the drum stops spinning its because the brushes have completely worn down and there is nothing left are you sure you snapped them into place properly or brought the correct model numbered ones? then are very difficult to get into the correct place I had a very similar problem and it took four attemps to get them in thr right place they are not the most easiest of things to do. if you have then it might be the motherboard electrical component if this is the case you will need a new machine im afraid if you dont have that much disposable funds try the freecycle website the offer free stuff look for you nearest area and take a look

My MAH 5500B washer has a squeak when fully loaded at the start of rotation in both directions.

Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary.

if still the problem then ,Motor is kicking on and off making that noise....so far for us this has been a motor issue 9.5 times out of 10.
