Question about Remington 16" Electric Chain Saw

3 Answers

Oil leak I have a Remington 16" electric chain saw. It leaks chain oil very badly. After a neighbor recently borrowed it (and added oil), I hung the saw from the handle with the blade pointed down. Later, there was a pool of oil on the garage floor. There was also a small pool of oil where the saw had been set in a horizontal position on our front porch.

Jdawg's right; the manual states that you must empty the oil after using it. Even after you do so, expect a few more drops to leak out over the next day or so - that's what mine does. I use some of the oil-absorbing pads that you can pick up in marine stores or auto parts stores, just let it sit on one of those for a while till the resevoir is completely empty.

I did some further research, looking online at the manual, and found this:

NOTE: It is normal for oil to seep when saw is not in use. It is necessary to empty oil after each use to prevent seepage.

In two other sections of the manual it says "Drain oil tank after each use."

For a very light-duty, inexpensive saw, it still seems to do a good job. Good enough for the price!

You can try and emptying the oil that your neighbor added and try your chain oil. I had the same problem with different chain oils. Also one thing it could be is the seal for the chain oil chamber

What kind of oil does a Remington 3.25 (Peak hp) 16"/40, 6 cm Electric chain saw take

You need to use bar & chain oil. It's thicker and stickier that regular oil so it will stay on the bar and chain and not run out of the saw when you are done using it.

Lost manual need to know what kind/weight oil does the Remington 16" chain saw require?

Any good quality chain saw 'bar' oil is suitable and it does not need to be an expensve brand either: it is highly recommended that you use a specially blended chain saw 'bar' oil but in emergency you can you fresh 'thick' (e.g. older) car engine oil but don't make it a habit as your chain and bar will wear off a lot faster!

What type of oil is used in the remington 16" chain saw?

From page 9 of a M12510US (bar oil is SAE 30 with additives to help it adhere to the bar and chain):
FILLING OIL TANK
1. Remove oil cap.
2. Fill oil tank with SAE #30 motor oil. Note: For temperatures below 30°F, use SAE #10 oil. For temperatures above 75°F, use SAE #40 oil. 3. Replace oil cap at once. Tighten oil cap firmly for good seal. This will avoid oil seepage from tank.
4. Wipe off excess oil.
Note: It is normal for oil to seep when saw is not in use. Empty oil tank after each use to prevent seepage.

This is one of the most complete "Owners Manuals" Remington offers. If not your saw you can find your manual here:

Oil for remington 3HP 16" chain saw.

The oil for an electric saw would only be for lubricating the bar, so you would only need to buy bar oil.
