Re: The Laptop Wont Even Start
If there is no hard drive in the machine what are you wanting the machine to do? Your laptop will not respond because there is nothing to respond to other than the CPU fan going and maybe some lights but you have not indicated this. Can you elaborate please a little bit more.... it might be the RAM.....

I have a Dell Studio laptop and sometimes some buttons become not responsive, including the power button. As for power button, I noticed that if you hold it for a few seconds, the laptop will turn on (at least in my case). The fix that works for me is as follows:
1. Turn the laptop off; 2. Disconnect the charger and take out the battery; 3. Wait for a few seconds; 4. Open the laptop lid (as you probably closed it while taking out the battery), push the power button and hold it for a few seconds. Nothing will happen as the laptop won't have any power, but it clears some sort of electrostatic load or whatever it's called; 5. Put the battery back in and turn on the laptop.
I used this for a few times, so perhaps it'll help in your case as well.
Your not getting power? When you plug the laptop in does the Battery charge light come on? Are you getting power to the laptop? Do you have a multimeter to verify voltage from th AC outlet to the AC jack? Or ,the power gets to the laptop and push the on/off button you get no response? Or, you push the on/off button and the laptop starts then shut down? No lights, no leds blink. Remove battery, Try another cord/charger. Has it been dropped or damaged that would jar loose a connection, or pulled by the cord resulting in a damaged AC jack?
When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?
When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.
Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous.
Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoeverwhen you press the power button. And if that's true maybe you wasoperating off the battery the last time you had it on and since the power cordis bad, it was not charging the battery so the battery is drained and the powercord is bad.
Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove theBattery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the batteryout) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can putthe battery back in and let it charge.Maybe your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugsinto the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside thejack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have totake the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto themotherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.
Unplug the computer and take out the battery.
Hold the power button for ten seconds.
Leave the battery out and plug in the power cord.
Press the power button.
If the computer turns on, put the battery and everything should now work.
This has solved every "laptop not turning on problem" for me and my friends.
Try to perform power drain. Take out the battery and unplug the power adapter. Press and hold the power button for 30secs. Put the battery back in then plugin the power adapter then trn on the computer. You can also power on the computer without the battery. If your computer wont turn just using the power adapter then there is a possiblility that there is a problem with your power adapter.
Try turning off your computer, removing the battery for 10-20 minutes,
put it back in, and turn it on/charge it. If this doesnt work it sounds
like a short in either your charging cord or your battery.
If its still under a warranty then send
it to your dealer.
Please plug also the power cord to the power source then wait for 10 - 20 minutes to charge the battery of your laptop then after the said time given above please turn on the laptop and see if your laptop is working now. Else if it is not then try to contact computer technician and let that person check the problem of your laptop Most of the problem causes of software and hardware.
