Yes, first try re installing the Xp sp1. After installation, copy your files in a flash drive or burn it in a CD/DVD. When that's done, re install your O.S. using your Xp sp2. I recommend formatting your hard drive so it will be a fresh install. After installation, re copy your files to the hard drive then re activate your Xp sp2 online.
Hope this works.

Deleting old SP1 partition on dell 2400

Sound like you have two versions of the operating system out there. Not sure what your question is. If you want to remove the old version you should have done that while you were doing the installation. That would have been easy by just telling the system to do it for you.

Now you will probably need some type of partitioning software and i'm not sure if you just delete it if it will cause problems when you try to boot because windows knows it's out there.

If I were you, I would just reinstall windows and clean the disk of everything. It shows you what it finds out there as far as operating systems, so just delete them both, then do a quick NTFS format of the drive and reinstall windows.

How do i restore it to factory settings?

First back-up all data- because all will be lost if you restore to factory settings

You can try "CTRL" + "F12" but that only works if there is a recovery console on a hidden partition ---otherwise
If you do not have a RECOVERY CD then contact Dell to purchase this Recovery CD for your model Dell computer or buy it on EBAY.
Boot up using the Recovery CD and follow the instructions.

The other way is to re-install Windows using a Windows installation CD; it must match the Windows version on the Windows Product Code label on the bottom of your laptop or on the side or back of the computer.

Boot up using the Windows installation CD and follow the instructions.
Next install all of the Dell's device drivers.
Next install the Windows service packs (SP2 & SP3 for XP, SP1 & SP2 for Vista)
Next Activate Windows via the Internet or by phone.
Next install all your programs - anti-virus etc.
Next click on Start - Programs - Windows Update (for the latest updates).
Next copy your data back to the computer

The device drivers for your model computer/laptop can be downloaded from the Dell WEB support site.

To download the drivers from Dell WEB site, select your model desktop or laptop, or a better option, type in the Service Tag number, this is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Tag label is missing then go the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages, the Service Tag number will be displayed). The Service Tag will open the page where the drivers specific for your model computer are located. Also make sure you select the Windows XP or Vista version of the drivers for your Windows operating system. Click on this link to download the drivers: -

Help with Windows repair install?

If your data files are deleted then repairing will not help you have to use some recovery software but if some of the important files of windows are deleted then repairing will help and you will need the XP installation disc with SP1 or SP2.

If i restore my dell inspiron 9400 to its original factory settings will it delete XP updated files received over the past couple of years and will it affect my security McAffe that i subscibe to?

Yes it will. I suggest that you download Windows XP SP2, and Windows XP SP3 and save to an external USB key or burn to a CD-R. If you save the downloads to your HD, restoring to factory settings will most likely overwrtite your HD. So with that. I also suggest that you backup all your personal data, such as documents, pictures, favorite, email contact list, emal messages, and any other personal data that you will need.

Once you have finished the restore to factory process, place the USB key or CD-R in the slots/drive, and install SP2 first, check no restart button, then install SP3. Reboot and now do your Windows Updates.

The reason I suggest sp2, then sp3 before running Windows update, is to save you time getting your unit back in production. If you did a Windows update after the restore to factory process, you would most likely be prompted to download and install SP2, then all the patches and updates would follow fro sp2. This way sp2 updates sp1, then sp3 updates sp2, and finally the updates and security patches for sp3 are all you need.

McAfee - Again download the software to a USB key or CD-R. Before you start the restore, open McAfee, select help, about, and print out or write down your subscription key. You will need these when you reinstall McAfee on your restored unit.

Hope this helps.............

God Bless !!!!!!!

Accessing restore partition

Hi,

Most computers shipped prior to Mid 2004 do not have the restore partition (called PC restore). To check if you computer does have the restore partition, Right-click on “My computer” select “Manage”, on the left of “Computer Management” window click on “Disk Management” . On the right bottom, if you see three partitions (the third one without a drive letter) then you have the restore partition.

The following two steps will work only if you have the PC restore partition / OR if you have not reinstalled the operating system previously.
To get into the PC restore (if you have it) hold down <control> + tap F11, when the computer turns on, I,e after the Dell logo.
The second and simpler option (if you can login to the computer) is to download, save and run the following file http://tech.atjolie.com/BOOT_DSR.EXE . The will restore the computer in the PC restore option.

If both these do not work, reinstallation using the Win XP cd is the only option

Hope this helps. Please rate your feedback!
Thanks,
VJ

Dell "Drivers and Utilities" CD

Hi, the "No Diagnostic Utility Partition Found" is returned because your laptop does not find the recovery partition on C drive.
Easiest way to create partition is with dell recovery cd. You can buy CDs from dell, buy finding contact on web site or buy from one of the following.
Dell Restore Disk: XP Pro SP2 for ... $35.00 - DIMOSOL - Digital ...
Dell Latitude D600 XP System Recovery CD ... $18.95 - recovery-cds.com ...
Dell Latitude D600 Vista System Recovery ... $18.95 - recovery-cds.com ...

Buy recovery cd according to windows version on sticker at the back of your laptop.
With recovery CD you wont need drivers.

Alternative solution is downloading drivers posted by Maanita after installing Windows from a generic Windows setup CD.

Dell usually supplies all the cd disks your computer was set up to use. the Win xp restore disk will reformat your hard drive with the original partition. I have a dell 4600C desktop and all my original stuff is on the burgundy win xp disk. the auxillary stuff is on the blue cd-s.

Reinstall windows xp

How do I install Microsoft Windows XP. Answer: Below are the steps required to installing the standard version of Microsoft Windows XP. It is important to realize that some computer manufacturers have their own proprietary install of Windows XP on a Recovery or Restore disc. Therefore the below steps may not all apply to how Windows XP is installed on your computer. If the below steps do not apply to how Microsoft Windows XP is installed on your computer and you are unable to correctly reinstall Windows XP it is recommended you contact your computer manufacturer for additional help, Computer Hope will not know how to install Windows using your manufacturers CD.
  1. Before following the below steps see document CH000186 for a checklist of things to consider before erasing the computer and starting over.
  2. The standard Microsoft Windows XP CD is bootable. Therefore start by placing the Windows XP CD in your computer and reboot.
  3. As computer boots you will be prompted to press any key to boot from CD, at this time press any key. If you do not get this prompt or are unable to boot from the CD please refer to document CH000217 for information on how to boot from a CD.
  4. When the Windows XP setup menu appears press ENTER to continue the setup.
  5. Next, the Windows XP licensing agreement will open, if you agree to this agreement press F8.
  6. Next, Windows will give you the option to repair Windows XP or to install a fresh copy if Windows XP is already installed on the computer. If you're wanting to install a new copy of Windows XP press ESC.
  7. Next, the partition setup will appear, it is recommended that if a partition already exists and you do not plan on having multiple operating systems on the computer that you delete the existing partition before continuing the setup. You will know if a partition exists if you see anything other then "Unpartitioned space".

    To delete the partition:
on the drive that you press D and ENTER then press L to delete the partition and then press ENTER and then if you are aware that this will delete all information on the partition.

Note: If you have multiple partitions, we suggest deleting all partitions unless you plan on using these partitions. Deleting each of the other partitions can be done using the same above steps.

    To create the partition:
Select the unpartitioned space you wish to create a partition on and press C, specify the size of the partition in MB, by default this will have the full amount of the drive and press ENTER.

  8. Once you have a partition ready to have Windows XP installed on it press ENTER to install.
  9. Next you will need to select whether the drive will use FAT or NTFS. We suggest NTFS for users who are not sure which file system they wish to use.
  10. After selecting the file system and pressing enter the computer will start formatting the drive. Depending on how big the partition is will determine the length of time the format will take.
  11. After the format Windows will begin installing the files and then take you through a wizard to continue with the remainder of the setup.
Good Luck, Please dont for get to Vote/Thank you.
