SOURCE: orange star button inside fridge
There is a defrost timer that starts the defrost. It may be in the section where the temperature controls are located. You will find a round hold with a clutch head screw accessible through the hole. Turn the screw clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one audible click. The system should then be in the defrost mode. Wait about 25 minutes and if the timer is good the system should go back into the cooling mode. If it does NOT, advance the timer to the next click and get a replacement timer. The defrost should have taken place if there is no other problem. If the unit went back into the cooling mode and defrost did not take place your problem is in the freezer section behind the rear wall. There you will find two items, a defrost heater and a defrost thermostat. You can check out the heaters with an Ohm meter. No reading, open, means replace the heater.

Could it be that there is degradation of the plastics due to heating of the defrosting coils or is it the smell off leaked gas.
Remove all the food stuff from the fridge and clean, wash the inside throughly. Now restart the fridge and after aboutone hour check for smell, continue this till you notice, if the smell comes in after about 10 hours then you must look into the defrosting heater for any traces of material on it causing the smell on heat.
