Right this problem could be the result of a couple of possible faults, the first thing to do is rule out the cables. Try connecting your PC to a monitor using a different cable... check all the connections. Try connecting you PC to another monitor again... If you are still not getting a picture It sounds like you have a problem with your computer's graphics card - new graphics cards are fairly cheap and quite simple to install.

I have a compaq presario computer using a compaq monitor. I have a Gateway HX2000 LCD flat screen monitor (year 2009) that I want to us instead of my compaq monitor. I have disconnected the compaq monitor...

I'm guessing the different monitors are different sizes? The only thing a driver for a monitor will do will tell the computer the max resolution that the monitor will be able to go up to. However most 90% of monitors can use the built in windows driver without issues. Your best bet is going to be to change the resolution on the monitor. To do this you can either hook up the old monitor, lower the resolution, and then plug in the other monitor. Or you can boot the computer into VGA low resolution mode by pressing F8 as the computer starts up and selecting that option. From there you can lower the resolution, and then put it at something more desirable with the new monitor.
The other possibility being your Gateway monitor is actually malfunctioning and you just happened to hook up a bad monitor.

When I first turn on the monitor I get a picture for about 1 second then it goes black. If I turn the monitor off then right back on I get the same 1 second pic then black. A different monitor works fine...

Make sure you are on the correct video setting on the monitor using the menu button.
If you are hooked up to dvi you need to make sure the monitor is on the dvi component. VGA same thing.

Hope this helps

I get the Monitor is in power save mode and won’t boot normally. It will boot in VGA mode but then goes haywire when you try to change the screen resolution. I’ve also gotten a blue screen saying a problem...

Usually this problem happens when the video card is sending a signal to the monitor that the monitor does not recognize. (Kind of like me telling you how to fix this problem in a language I dreamed up myself.) The monitor will work on a different computer, because that computer has a video card "talking" to the monitor in a language it understands. So the solution is a different monitor that has a resolution setting your computer can talk to. Possibly you can borrow one, change the resolution of the card, and put your own back in. You can plug in and unplug monitors while the computer is on with no problem, to test.

Monitors comes on for a few seconds then goes black. the only way is to turn it on and off but still only stays on for a couple for seconds

I think the power board might be going bad in there. Hook up a different good working monitor to the computer and see what happenss.

If the monitor still turns off after a few seconds then you know its the video card acting up. If the monitor stays on then you know its the original monitor that is bad for sure.

Dell Computer Monitor - Black Screen

If it worked on a computer at the IT person, it is most likely a faulty graphics card in your computer. You may want to get that checked out.
