Question about Kenmore 62882 Electric Dryer

1 Answer

Kenmore 80 Series dryer won't start.

When the start button is pushed, the dryer makes a humming noise which is normally accompanied by the dryer starting up. Now, it doesn't start. The noise stops when the button is released. Occasionally, the dryer will still start up. The sound made me think it was a belt problem. In opening up the back, I found several loose ball bearings at the base of the exhaust fan which made me think it may be more than the belt. It is possible the past owners ran these ball bearings through the dryer - I also found several bobby pins, a few nailes, etc.
Anyway, I read the detailed instructions given by SolutionGuy here:
http://www.fixya.com/support/t225746-broken_kenmore_dryer_80_series
and was so impressed I felt I needed to post my problem.

Thanks! (especially for the no ball bearings on the roller info)

Shortly after I posted I opened up more thoroughly and found that my dryer in fact does not have a belt at all, but a roller system. I cleaned thoroughly and found an old utility knife blade was jammed in at the edge of the drum. So far, it appears to have fixed the problem. I guess the moral of the story is that it's not a good idea to run tools through the dryer!

It was an intermittent problem though, so I guess if it happens again I'll be looking for a new motor...

My mistake. There is a very narrow belt around the centre of the drum. There is also a groove at the back of the drum where I expected there might be a belt, but there is not. It appears the groove is for the roller(s) to fit into. However, I did not open the dryer completely or remove the drum. I haven't looked below it. Would it be right to say the rollers turn the drum while the belt just holds the drum in place?

I see this all the time the dryer motor is simply to weak to kick in so it humms or sometime starts,a good test to do is flip the top up and push the start button and turn the drum at the same time and the motor should kick in,the dryer has no ball bearing it is on rollers,if you want you can check your local used appliance store and see if they have one or maybe ebay, your model number is inside the dryer door,so to sum it up it is the motor, let me know how you make out-mike

110.64872400 kenmore dryer 80 series. dryer makes humming noise when start button is pushed, can turn drum manually. please help

The humming noise is most likely coming from the timer motor and not from the drive motor. This characterizes a problem with a blown thermal fuse which is wired in series with the drive motor and located on the blower housing. Power to the motor is cut when the thermal fuse blows open and consequently the drive motor cannot run. No dryer function works when the drive motor cannot run.

Unplug the dryer or disconnect power then pry the lower access panel off with a flat-head screwdriver as shown.

Remove the screw from the lint duct bracket and remove the bracket. Remove the two hex-head screws from the lint duct and remove the duct to access the thermal fuse and the cycling thermostat.

Click on the links below for the detailed troubleshooting of this problem and the parts diagram. The cycling thermostat(part number

Dryer will not start upon pushing the start button.

the motor is more than likely bad but just to be safe check the blower wheel and make sure there is not anything in it then remove the belt and try to turn motor if the motor feels real tight then you need to replace the motor
