Assuming you have a windows xp disc you would insert the xp disc and boot from the xp disc as though you are going to re install but when you get to the options select to go to recovery console / recovery mode and then use the following commands

fixboot
fixmbr

chkdsk /r

notice there is a space between chkdsk and the /r

the last command might take quite a while but should repair any issues.

Once done you should be able to boot back into windows - if not then it is an issue with your boot.ini file

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330184

If you have any problems let me know.

If chkdsk /r will not run or reports issues then your hard drive is most likely damaged and you will need to recover your data in which case make a bart pe disc :

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Go to the FAQ / help section and it should give you a guide on how to create the bart pe disc but it is fairly straight forward

you will need your xp disc the download ( provided on the downloads section of the above website ) which you install and run and it will create an iso or allow you to burn the outcome to a cd which you can then boot off of and should allow you to recover your data.

The other option is to attach the hard drive in your dell to another computer making sure the jumpers ( if its an IDE drive ) to slave mode and then you should be able to retrieve your data off of the drive that way.

Best case is your os files corrupted, in that case you can try reinstalling your OS. If that does not work then there may be some hardware issue, it'll best if take it to support center.

UNMOUTABLE BOOT VOLUME

Your hard drive has a problem. Sounds like a corrupted boot sector to me. If you have no CD on that machine, you'll have to format a USB flash drive with basic diagnostics on it and set the computer to boot from that device. Then you can fix the boot sector with the fixboot command. var fctb_tool=null; function FCTB_Init_fac79379873e4c8ab6c2d3dd3fff21b0(t) { fctb_tool=t; start(fctb_tool); }

My dell inspiron 6000 wont boot up. error message Windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press delete to enter setup
Press and hold delete during the boot up process to enter BIOS you can load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults ,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart then
once you have your computer running then click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to fix any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive then defragment your hard drive
hope this helps

OUCH... Might need a new harddrive or motherboard. Does it even let you go into the bios? Maybe you can do a full reinstall to save you the dough.

Blue screen with error message on startup

Most likely problem is a physical problem with the hard drive, but could be plenty of other things. Best bet is to back up your information (if possible) and do a fresh windows install, if you continue to get the message after a clean windows install, your hard drive is not stable, and has a problem.

Blue screen and windows shut down

For the issue of BSOD of Unmountable Boot volume, the only solution so far is to reinstall the system. If you are unaware of how to do it, it would be easier to contact Dell technical support and allow them to guide you thru it. (if your warranty is active, it's free)

Blue Screen and error message at boot up

You can find the recovery sequence for your machine at Dell's support site. Bellow is a link to Dell support. Keep in mind that a blue screen indicates an operating system error, and may be caused by a hard drive failure. If this error is due to a hard drive failure the built in automated system recovery will not work, because it's stored on the hard drive.
