Question about Yamaha RX-V461 AV Receiver

Open Question

Sound distortion on Yamaha Receiver RX-V461

Since purchase there has always been a sound distortion when running through the HD set top box whilst in dolby digital. However this is not the case when run in PCM.

I have had a couple of different brands of set top boxes and it is always the same case, either optical or coaxial.

When watching DVD's it is intermittent when coming through in dolby digital.

Is this a common problem with the RX-V461?

SOURCE: problem hooking up my Yamaha RX-V461 to my PS3

When you connect the optical cable to the ps3 you must change the output to optical on the ps3. To do this, startup your ps3 then go to settings then audio output settings and change it to Digital Out (Optical).

SOURCE: HK AVR35 Receiver - Dolby Digital not displaying or working

If the display is showing as optical/PCM, then the input signal is in 2 Ch Stereo.

Try to change the signal from the source i.e. the DVD player, On the remote, go to audio and press repatedly , the audio would change from audio1, audio 2 .... and so on, depending upon how may have been recorded on the DVD. If the DVD is recorded in Dolby Digital, it may show the audio as Dolby Digital 5.1 on you monitor. Once this setting has been done, your Receiver should automatically detect it and show as Optical/Dolby digital.

Please let me know if you you solve your problem.

SOURCE: I have a PS3 hooked up via HDMI to my Yamaha

Your PS3 probably has a setting for what digital bitstream it produces. Check it out. Dolby Digital is probably what you want.

Different sound levels dvd and cable hdtv yamaha htr-6130

Well, first of all, the method you are using is the lowest quality. You should upgrade to a toslink(digital optical cable) or a digital RCA cable. The toslink is the best all around. But it is normal for some devices to have higher sound output than others.

Setting up Cable with HDMI

Yes, the firmware on your hdtv box has an old firmware, I switched my old hdtv box with a newer one box and the problem was solved. It seems that it can't work if your hooking up with DVI to HDMI cable to your receiver to tv. Your hd box must have an HDMI out otherwise it causes problems. I also have rx-v661 and i finally hooked up everything HDMI to the receiver and then to the tv and it was having the problem you speak of. After I switched out the hd box for a newer one everthing worked fine.

Help setting up Yamaha RX-V461

Typically, only stereo inputs exist on any comsumer-grade receiver, and the actual decoding to 3, 4, 5, 6, and even 7.1 is done internal in the receiver. When a "placement" signal is detected by the receiver, the sound is routed to the correct speaker. Please refer to a user manual
