THE LAST THING TO SUSPECT IS "LOW ON REFRIGERANT". MAIN CAUSES IN ORDER: "OVERCHARGED",DIRTY FILTER, DIRTY COIL, BLOWER MOTOR IS HEATING-UP AND SHUTTING OFF ON INTERNAL OVERLOAD PROTECTOR, ANY THING THAT MAY BE RESTRICTING AIR FLOW IN THE AIR HANDLER, NON-CONDESEBALES, LOW REFRIGERANT. I FIND ON MOST LOW CHARGED UNIT THE "SUCTION" LINE IS WARM AND THE EVAPORATOR COIL IS FROSTED. YOU ONLY GET ICE BACK ON THAT LINE ON THE COMPRESSOR IF YOU VISUALLY LOOK AT THE EVAPORATOR COIL. A COIL THAT IS ICED UP IS LACK OF AIR OR A OVERCHARGE. A LOW SECTION OF SOLID ICE INDICATES A LOW CHARGE.

If the top of the compressor is freezing you either have low refrigerant or a restriction in the coil. Check the air filter and change if necessary. Turn the outside unit off using the outside disconnect found a few feet away from the condenser. Let the indoor unit blow air for a few hours to melt the ice off of the coil. Turn back on the outside unit and after about a half hour, you should feel the cool air from your ducts. If the cool air gets warmer over the next hour, you will need a tech to look for leaks and recharge your unit. If it continues to blow warm air even after the 3-hour wait, you have other issues. To answer your original question, on the indoor unit you will find access panels that can be removed for inspection and cleaning. They are commonly located where a 3/4" drain pipe exits the cabinet. While the unit is off, remove these panels and inspect for a buildup of debris. Good Luck!

Model Number: UACC-036JAS The unit works fine. The problem is it doesn't shut down after the specified temperature has been reached. The furnace blower shuts down, but the ac unit keeps on running....

Hello, usually a stuck contactor coil will cause this on the outside unit. When the outdoor unit runs continously and the indoor blower does not run no heat is being absoebed by the evaporator coil and thus the line freezes. Replaceing the contactor will fix the problem.

I moved into a house and the previous owner knows nothing about the heat pump and I don't know if its works or not......how much would it cost to do a diagnostic???

First of all, you confirm with your model whether there is heat pump. If it's with heat pump definately RV (Reversing valve) near the compressor will be there. You can see from top angale in your condensor unit. And also keep 80 degree setting and "heat " mode in your remote and check the heat air comes from indoor.

Outside compressor is frozen - shut the fan down. Will it defrost and be operational

Is the unit a heat pump? Did this unit freeze up during A/C mode? Only if it was due to mild weather and thermostat turned down to low., past 68 degrees. Filter could be dirty or coil dirty or low freon charge.

RUUD Central Air/Heat Pump

Start with the simplest first it,s not fun but it's necessary EVERY TIME. Clean your evaporator and condenser coil, change your air filter. Getting to the evap. coil is often a real headache and a result doesn't get done often. When its clogged as you probably know the refrigerant can't absorb heat at the coil so it tries to absorb heat on the way to the compressor freezing the hot gas line the safety circuits that protect the heat pump compressor from getting liquid refrigerant back to the compressor almost immediately will take the compressor of line (looking somewhat like a defrost cycle). I hope this helps it's a tough repair GL!
