before and after running "disk eraser" program which wrote zeros to my hard drive and fdisking the mbr, I did a clean install of window xp service pack 2. I was able to run all the window udates from microsoft, but when I tried to install avg anti virus software it said it needed the location of the installation package. On running it the second time, I got a "corruption" message. It will not accept any antivirus software, but will load any other programs. It will also not run any online virus checkers. It seems to work fine otherwise. I also formatted the hard drive once with a floppy and again did a complete format with the xp install disk. Everytime that I modified the bios, it got most of the way thru the anti virus installation the first run thru and hung much quicker the second try. I also set a bios password, and when I rebooted the computer,. it would not accept the password that I assigned. My next step was going to be to flash the bios, ended up at this website while I was searching for the bios download. 350 watt power supply, 1gb ram, pc chips m871g mb

Impossible to get a virus in the BIOS. Could be corrupted BIOS, faulty motherboard, power supply (too low), or RAM.

AVG free version official site.
Trend Micro has several free online tools.
Avast has a free version.
All are virus free and work as well as any paid anti-virus software.
Microsoft Windows Defender isn't anti-virus software, it is anti-spyware. Since it is from Microsoft you know it is full of bugs and should be avoided. For anti-spyware use Spybot S&D or Malwarebytes.

The best way is to take out your HDD and get thoroughly checked up in another PC which has a genuine Antivirus, including Root Kit and ability to scan bootsector for viruses(QuickHeal has one). After getting it disinfected put it back on your M/c and do a clean Install of the OS.,,,,hope this will help 'cos once you viruses in the bootsector, its damn difficut to get rid of it.......sodeep

Since your OS is genuine microsoft, I would advice you to download the Service Pack 3. Do not attempt to install AVG Antivirus because most of the free versions available on the net are fakes and they themselves are virus Infected. If you are able to format it after having it thoroughly inspected by another PC, do a clean install without AVG, instead Use Microst Window Defender. Its good............sodeep

It sounds to me like you requre Win'XP Service Pack 3.
If you are using Service Pack 2 or earlier, there is no
SATA support which is why the HDD is not recognized.

Get Service Pack 3 and your problems will be solved.

Good Luck

What to do,computer is full of viruses wont let me in anywhere, system locked up,

In cases like this, you have no alternative but to format the hard disk and install Windows again.
You need your Windows installation CD and product installation code. After installing Windows and the Service packs, plus the computer's device drivers, then activate Windows, and install your programs.

My computer is horrible it is so slow even while typing in a website to go to it acts like it can't keep up and i type slowwwww

3 things are known to case this issue.

1. There is a lack of available system memory - The more available RAM the better especially when editing video
2. There is a lack of available disk space or swap disk space - swap space is used as soon as the memory is unavailable and really sows everything down to a snails pace and sometimes this can mean only processing a few bytes every minute - not very good when editing huge AV files. As a guide you need approx 10-20% free space on the Hard drive to make sure the PC operates efficiently.
3. There is a driver problem. This can be a video driver issue and often needs an update in the video card being used. Graphics and Video editing demands a lot of processing.

If this persists then it would be a very good idea to uninstall the application and drivers and then to run a Registry clean using the Ashampoo tool (available free of charge for 30 days from to make sure that all instances of the driver and application have been removed so as not to cause any contention between drivers and applications. Then reboot the PC and reinstall the application from scratch.

You should also check for any updates to the application that you are using especially if you have applied XP updates or service packs recently as sometimes the service packs can seriously upset applications.

Virus disabled my sound and I can't download any anti virus softw

You Better Format your Drive if not possible then plug it on some other PC (Which got the AntiVirus, with Latest Updates ).
Scan it then, make it clean and go on.
But if your Machine is totally messed up then it will be very difficult for you make it absolutely error free, so the best is to begin again with the antivirus, and keep the Virus Updated.

Cant install any antivirus

If you have a virus which inhibits you from installing any virus software, you're in big trouble.
Try using an anti-vifus disk or CD/DVD made on a clean machine, by putting it in your CD/DVD drive, and running the scan and clean from there, to see if you can get rid of the virus.
Generally, this kind of virus will not allow you to remove it, and you will need to reformat your hard disk, then reinstall Windows from scratch.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Motherboard upgrade??

Dear kaname,

Your computer can support Windows XP, which has better hardware support and compatibility with the 2003 Office suit. XP also updates your hardware automatically once you are on the internet. You might want to try this.

Keep in mind that the older the Operating System, the harder it is for Office suites to compat. Newer Operating systems have better support for your computing. If you don't have HDD problems, the BIOS should not prevent you from loading SP2 for Win2000.

1. The SP2 Source Disk may have a problem
2. The Win 2000 you have already loaded may be missing components, preventing the SP2 to load.
2. Notton Antivirus versions and the 2003 office both reject Win 2000. They just don't like it; it's getting too old.

Get with it, Kaname!!!!
