The surround sound only plays on the two front speakers and not the rest when the tv is on, only time it works right is when you use the dvd player. i have looked at all the setting on the tv ( a samsung 5 series) and nothing!

you have to check to see if your TV also has "AUDIO OUTPUT" ports, they would be red/white (not next to a yellow - those are inputs", you would hook up red/white from back of the TV to the back of the DVD player where it is labeled "input", you then turn on the dvd player and press the 'source' button to switch it to the right input for your connection. P.S. - it will only do the front two speakers because your tv only outputs 2 channel audio.
sounds like you need to surround modes. There is usually a Stereo, Dolby, DTS, "virtual surround", 4-speaker mode etc.. When you play a CD or connect to TV it likely defaults to playing stereo or virtual surround.
With real surround, almost all of the voices are coming from the center-channel speaker (normally placed closest to the TV).
Also, check to make sure the center channel is connected properly.
for your dvd player you just go from audio out on the back of the dvd played to the audio in on the surround sound. and you would do the same for the tv if it has an audio out. your surround sound shoud have more than 1 audio in. and then when you swicht from tv to dvd you might have change the channle, setting, source, or what ever it might be called on the surround sound. and if your tv does not have a audio out contact me at email@example.com and i try to help you. hope that works :)
Sounds like it's just in 2 channel stereo mode, only 2 speakers working out of 5 and a sub, look for a selector switch for switching to 5.1 surround, as far as the no video problem try replacing the cable for the video connection.
I can understand your problem, I have some what of the same issues with my home theater setup when watching events. One of the only suggestions I can make is adjusting the "Dolby Pro Logic II Mode". After reviewing your owners manual it appears you should be able to change the mode by pressing the PL II Mode button found in the lower keypad on your remote. It appears the options you should have are Music - Cinema - Pro Logic - Matrix - Stereo. You may want to try Music or Stereo when watching your events. In Stereo setting it should provide sound out of the front speakers and sub-woofer only. In Music, there are more processing that is done so you could hear more then just the front speakers.
I hope this makes your next your next PPV Party a big hit!

To upmix 2-channel sound (such as that in a TV broadcast) into 5.1 sound, press AMP and then SUR. DECODE until "PL II Movie" is displayed. This will give you "cinema-like" surround sound from a 2-channel source.
You can also assign this to one of your "Scenes" by following the procedure for scene assignment on page 26 of your manual.
