Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner

Duo Therm compressor tries to start and kicks out

I have two Duo Therm 630516.331 AC/Heat 15k units with the Comfort Control Thermostat. The units are 2007 models. The bedroom AC works fine but the living room unit just started acting up. The fan starts and then the compressor tries to start for a second or two then stops before it really starts going. The fan will continue to run and the compressor will try and start about every minute or so but will not stay on. It was working fine yesterday. I tried shutting everything down and re-setting the breaker but no luck.

Thanks for any help
Randy

I have a meter, no wiring diagram of the unit. Is the capacitor under the cover in the roof?

What kind of readings should it have?

The capacitor is not a start it is a run capacitor. You should be reading 5 mfd on the fan side and 35 mfd on the compressor side. If your meter reads mfd's. But look at the capacitor and see if it is swelled up or out sure sign it is bad.

yes it is do you know what it looks like? Silver oval or round approx. 3 inches long and about that wide.

Can you check the capacitor out? Sounds like you need to get a new one. Do you have any metering device?

I don't think these little units have a start capacitor but what I would do is check that the on/off switch wires to make sure they aren't loose. Also check the wires to the compressor for loose wires as well. It is possible that these are the first signs that the compressor is about to fail. They also can act up some when they haven't been used for awhile and then you try and start them up. Try running the unit for a few hours without asking it to cycle. It might just be a sticky valve.

If it is a 15kbtu unit, it most likely will have a start cap which is conducive to the symptom stated. If the start cap or start cap sw goes out the motor will not start and will always trip either the compressor motor internal overload circuit breaker or the main line cb. The start cap parallels the run cap for only approx 0.5 to 1.0 second. Replacement kick start cap assy's are readily available and very easy to install.

Why am I not getting power to ac capacitor?

A thermostat or a relay activated by the thermostat turns power on to the capacitor for the compressor.

I have a Dometic 15K roof Ac on my FW. After the AC reaches therm temp, the compressor and the fan turn off, but the fan starts right back up again and runs until you set the thermostat on off.

That is normal operation, only the compressor cycles, the fan stays running to keep air circulating for better temp control. Otherwise the rear of the space could get 5 degrees warmer than the front

Duo therm ac in my rv quit when the converter burned up does the ac need 12v to work?

there is a fuse located under the shroud on the roof AC on a circuit board that controls the thermostat to turn on the power to the Air Conditioner replace it it is marked F-1 or, on some F-2 etc.
the air conditioner works on both DC voltage for the thermostat and AC voltage for the compressor

The clicking sound is usually the relays in the control unit making or releasing. When they click does anything turn on? Check the control unit that is located inside the lower unit of the air conditioner. Remove the cover and listen for the clicking sound. If it sounds as if the relays are clicking, try removing power from the thermostat and see if that stops it. There are three relays on the board, one is the compressor, one is the fan relay and the other is for heat. See if you can pinpoint which one is clicking and go from there. It is either that you have a bad thermostat or a bad relay board.
