    the atx -1956-d was removed. the new power supply does not have this connector. the motherboard has a position for this connector

    i"m trying to determine if ths machine will run correctly with the new power supply of micro atx 250w p4--12v. without this connector.

    apparently the vendor claimed that this the upgraded model for the power supply. I"m contacting the vendor right now to fix the problem. i really appreciate your quick help!!!!

    My replacement supply did not have this connector so I left it open and it works. Tracing the green wire to the original PS motherboard it says F-C. The HP motherboard says FAN. The ATX PS spec says:A pullup should be used internal to the power supply for this signal so that if the connector is left open, the fan will be requested to operate at full speed.

    So I think it is the Fan Control, it lets the desktop control the fan speed.

This is not a problem, and as it sounds, is not used in your system.

Some video cards have such huge processing power that they need thier own supply, as it would draw too much current from the motherboard otherwise. Below is a web site which reinforces this information, and gives an explanation of each connector.

    OK I am sorry, I missed the HP part. HP has a proprietary power supply. Some replacement supplies will have this connector, and some wont. Most of the time I just try to find the OEM power supply. Generally we would have many of these around. You should be able to find one reletively easily in inexpensively. But I don't think the unit will run without that connector.

My power went out and when it came back on the computer would not come on


eMachines uses low quality hardware components inside their computers. This is the way they can sell them at budget prices.

One main hardware component is the low quality power supply they use.
A generic power supply made by Bestec. (A generic power supply manufacturer)

(PSU. Power Supply Unit. The type of PSU used is a SMPS.
Switched-Mode Power Supply,

Low quality;
A) Electrolytic Capacitors (Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitor)
B) Rectifier Bridge
C) MOSFET/s
D) Wiring is too small in gauge
to name a few of the components.

However IMHO it is also best to check out the Power On switch.
There is a simple test to see whether the problem is a faulty Power On switch, or a faulty Power Supply.

The test involves bypassing the Power On switch. The Power On switch is not involved in this test.
A jumper wire is used on the Soft Power On wire, [ PS-ON ], and a Ground wire in the ATX main power cable connector.

If you bypass, and the Power Supply comes on you have a bad Power On switch.
If the Power Supply does Not come on you have a bad Power Supply.

The Power Supply used is just a common ATX version.
ATX refers to the Form Factor of the power supply.
Regular size ATX form factor is approximately 6 inches Wide, 5-1/2 inches Long, and 3-1/2 inches Tall. (Height)

There are also differences in the pinout of the ATX main power cable.
Yours may have 20-pins, or 24-pins.
Power Supply's sold now take this into consideration.
Their ATX main power cable can be used as a 20-pin, or a 24-pin version.

Most computer testing facilities will test your current power supply for free. A replacement is very inexpensive to replace. Bestbuy, MicroCenter, small computer shops and buy replacemnent from Amazon.com, newegg.com.. Just make sure you have the correct information for your replacement. When I turn it on monitor reads vga no input and the power is on, the fan is still running.


Bad Power Supply. Weak voltage power rail.

Has enough power to light LED lights, and maybe spin fans, but not enough to turn the Processor on.

1) ALL of the LED lights on at once use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.

3) A typical Processor uses 51 to 125 Watts. Depends on what Processor it is.

The Compaq Presario SR2013WM desktop computer, comes with an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ processor, that fits in a Socket AM2.

(You can use a larger wattage Power Supply with NO problems.

A) The ATX main power cable is a 24-pin ATX main power cable. All of the new power supply's have an ATX main power cable, where the connector can be used as a 20-pin, or 24-pin.

B) Uses a 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable.

C) Past the two power cables above, just make sure the Power Supply has a SATA power cable, (For the SATA harddrive), a Floppy Drive power cable, (Used for the Card Reader), and enough 4-pin standard Peripheral power cables.
(Misnomered as 'Molex')


3) Typical 24-pin ATX main power cable,

I am looking at a Dell Dimension 4550 PC for a friend and it won't boot up...i push the power button on and there is an almost orange/greenish light on the power button... no beeps no diagnostic lights are...


Bad Power Supply. Weak voltage power rail.

1) 3.3 Volts
2) 5 Volts

The Power On button LED functions as a diagnostic light also.

The Power Supply is just an ATX form factor version. The common Power Supply form factor used in MANY desktop computers.
(ATX form factor for a Power Supply refers to the size, and shape of the Power Supply's case.
Approximately 6 inches Wide, 5.5 inches Long, and 3-1/2 inches Tall)

HOWEVER, (Not shouting), there is an area of concern, should you try a Power Supply you may have available for a test, or purchase one.

It involves the wiring of the 20-pin ATX main power cable. More specifically the power cable's connector.

To explain view the standard wiring, set for a 20-pin ATX main power cable's connector,

Looking at the photo to the far right, observe the color code of the wires, going down into the socket holes of the connector.

Look at the Lock tab on the side of the connector. This will help you orient the color code of the wires, and their placement in the socket holes, to the chart below the photos.

The connector on the end of the 20-pin ATX main power cable, is a Male connector.
Where the wires go into the connector, is the Back of the connector.
In the middle photo you can see the Front of the connector.

The wires going down into the ATX main power cable's connector, end in a female metal terminal.
The connector on the motherboard, (Shown in the photo to the Left), has Pins.
The metal female terminals go over the Pins.

The pins are numbered. The color code of the wires match up to the pins.
This is shown in the chart.

The illustration may not be accurate. You'll have to compare since you have the computer, and Power Supply in front of you.

For a time period Dell was a Proprietary manufacturer.
Meaning they wanted THEIR parts used on THEIR computers, and ONLY THEIR parts.
They had the motherboard manufacturers make motherboards according to their specs.

One of the specifications was that the pins would be CHANGED around, in the motherboard connector for the ATX main power cable.

They also had Power Supply manufacturers make the ATX power cable to their specifications.

This means if a user bought an aftermarket Power Supply, the color code of the wires in the ATX main power cable would Not match.

Many users did buy an aftermarket Power Supply, and installed it.
Burnt motherboards, fried Processors, and graphics cards, resulted.

Orange wires are 3.3 Volts
Red wires are 5 Volts
Yellow wires are 12 Volts.
Black wires are Ground wires.

Guess what happens when you plug a 12 Volt wire into where a 3.3 Volt, or 5 Volt, or Ground wire is supposed to Be?
POOF!

My suggestion would be to look for a Power Supply that is an ATX form factor, is KNOWN to be good, and is compatible, for a test unit.
You, or someone you know may have upgraded to a better computer, and you may be able to borrow the Power Supply for a test unit.

Compatible:
Has the Correct power cables.
1) 20-pin ATX main power cable, OR a 20/24-pin ATX main power cable.
(20-pin connector that has an additional connector with 4 pins. Just use the 20-pin)

2) 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable. (Also referred to as P4 MB, and P4 ATX 12V)

Chances are that 250w power supply is not going to power a motherboard with a 24 pin connector, but you can try.
You will need to purchase a 20 to 24 pin adapter cable.

Install a temporary power supply to verify condition.


That mean you have bought the wrong PSU.

Return the new one, when you are at the store you purchased it from, ask them for a Micro ATX PSU, that is the kind you need.

The only other thing you will need to know is how many watts you want it to be, a decent one would be 400-550 watts

Want to upgrade power supply to be compatible with my computer


This is a common misconception about pwr supplies. What is important are the connectors (type and number). The simplest way is to remove the power supply and match the mother board connectors(the 2 different ones) and the number of pin connectors you need for the drives. I could not find a picture of the mother board to tell you which ones will fit but if you have a used computer dealer in your area he can. The physical match up is what is important as the pin outs are tech standard. Hope this helps.

Soldered in new fuse, blew it right away...whats a good upgrade?


A new power supply will fix your problem, and when the fuse blows do not replace it. It blows to protect your computer. please replace with a new power supply.
