Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I own a copy of Microsoft Money 2002 which operates on a laptop computer whose operating system is Windows XP Home Edition. Some days ago it ceased to operate. The start icons are displayed in all the correct places but when selected, the programme opens with the title page and the signature tune but before the home page comes up a blank page is displayed and a message that Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. It then shows an error message report box which I have sent to Microsoft several times. It then proves impossible to get out of that programme and return to the desk top. I have detected no problems with any other programme. I have cleaned and defragged the computer and have re-installed the programme from the start disc which was properly purchased. The computer still will not open Microsoft Money and always comes up with the same error message.

Which CD are you referring to: the Windows Operating system CD or the Microsoft Money CD? Surely, if I reload the Windows Operating System CD then all my file data will be lost in the download???

Just to add to your info the laptop is a Dell Inspiron

As far as I am aware, there is only the C drive. So I do not know where else to put the rest of the computer. If I shut down and put the Windows XP disc in the disc drive and then start up again, will that over write the files correctly so that the corrupted file will be corrected?

Save your data files that contain information you have saved while you used the program... and reinstall the money 2002 program... after you have done that move the saved data files back into the program... it should be good to go

Microsoft makes it available as a download so that people can fix computers that don't have a working CD/DVD drive. You'll still need your registration key, of course, from your original install. Look for a sticker on your computer with the 25-character code. Here is the link for you. Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 Utility Setup Disks for...

The best advice anyone can give you is to contact Microsoft at:

http://www.microsoft.com

If you have a valid license, Microsoft should provide you with a legal copy of the OS. No one at FIXYA is going to provide you with a copy of a Microsoft OS, because that would constitute piracy. Contact Microsoft directly and we can all avoid the legal problems of engaging in criminal activity.

Good luck; please let us know how this turns out.

LOST WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION CD, HOW DO I GET ANOTHER OR DOWNLOAD IT

You can't. It is proprietary software from Microsoft and they guard it religiously. Borrow a CD from a friend who has the *exact* same edition you have and make a copy. Then if you need to re-install, the Certificate Of Authenticity Key number (COA) on the sticker on your computer should let you install. For desk top computers it is usually stuck to the side or back of the case. On laptops, it is on the bottom. That COA number is your proof that you paid for the operating system when you bought the machine. Even if you bought it used.

Hi.

If she did not format the hard disk, then the Windows XP startup option will be present in boot option. When computer startup you will get a choice like this:

1 Microsoft Windows Vista Home Edition.
2 Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2

In that case you can restore XP, starting on XP and editing the file winboot.ini, that is an hidden system file located on C:/ drive.

See:How to edit the Boot.ini file in Windows XP.

If instead Windows XP does not start, or if you do not get the boot option, that means that Windows XP system file had been deleted.

In that case the only way to get back Windows XP is reinstalling the system from scrap, using a Windows XP install disk, and the number listed on the licence sticker.

Regards.

Without getting to bogged down in details, Microsoft allows you to have one licence per machine. So the simple answer to your question is purchase another copy of Microsoft Windows XP.
