I get a white strip down the page. I changed toner and move blue tab back and forth on drum, but it is still there.

for now, that wasn't very helpful.

    1. I already changed the toner, which I said in my earlier email-- see above

    2. the drum should not be damaged - this printer is only a couple of months old

    3. Do you know this model HL-5250DN? I don't believe my preinter even has a scanner. If it does, where would it be?

  • sarafriedman Apr 13, 2009

this was not very helpful so far

    1. See above: i alrady changed the toner

    2. the printer is only 2-3 months old; the drum should not be damaged yet and that shoud not be a suggestion at this point

    3. I don't believe my printer has a scanner. If so, where would it be. HL-5250DN, which I already said as well.

If you have print quality problems, clean the corona wire as follows:

Do NOT use flammable substances or any type of spray to clean the inside or outside of the machine. Doing this may cause a fire or electrical shock.

Press the front cover release button and then open the front cover.
Take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
-We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner.
-To prevent damage to the printer from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes.
3.Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left and left to right several times.
Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the printer. Close the front cover.

Another option;
1. You can also check the physical condition of the fuser device ( this is the hot device at the back of the printer) if there is a tiny jammed paper on it.
2. Try using a blower to help clean the intenals of the printer. Of course, remove the toner cartridge before doing this.

Hope this helps...

Your Problem may be due to any one of the following. If the line is from top to bottom then check the following one by one .

1. Make sure that a torn piece of paper is not inside the printer covering the scanner

2. Wipe the scanner window with a soft cloth. Page No.74

3. The toner cartridge may be damaged. Put in a new toner cartridge. page No. 63

4. The drum unit may be damaged. Put in a new drum unit.Page no. 68

Please down load the user manual from this link, which will give you full details how to do this.

I hope this will solve your issue.

Good Luck.

If my solution proves useful please accept it.

Model MFC 8480 DN is giving a drum error message. HELP! Is there an online users manual available?

Yes, the manual is available from Brother. See and then look at the results for all of the manuals. The direct link to the User's Guide is .

A drum error could mean that the corona wire on the drum needs cleaning or that the drum unit needs to be replaced. Make sure that the unit has cooled down before doing any maintanence on the drum unit. To clean the corona wire, turn off the machine and unplug all of the cables from the printer (telephone cord first, power last). Then open the front cover and pull out the drum and toner unit. Move the blue tab back and forth (right to left and left to right) several times. Leave the tab in the home position (aligning the triangle on the tab with that on the unit) when done. Then reinstall the drum and toner unit. Close the cover and reconnect the cables before turning the unit back on.

If you need to replace the drum unit, order DR-20. For changing the drum follow the above steps through removing the drum and toner unit. Then remove the toner from the drum (make sure not to spill the toner) by pushing down on the blue lever. Then put the toner cartridge into the new drum (the blue lever should lift into place and you should hear the cartridge snap into place). To reset the drum counter, do not close the front cover. Leave it open then connect the cables and turn on the unit. Press Clear/Back and then press 1. Close the cover when you see Accepted.

I hope this helps.

The printer prints every page grey and the print is lighter than normal. the toner light is not on. should I replace the toner cartridge?

Your problem sounds more like a bad drum unit than a toner issue. You should try cleaning the corona wire first which you do by removing the drum/toner unit and looking for the little sliding blue tab. Move this back and forth a couple of times and then reinsert the cartridge and try printing again.

When we scan or copy, a long line comes up on the paper

You might need to clean the corona wire. Pull out the drum and cartridge and slide the blue tab on top back and forth. Be sure to return the tab to the home position afterward.

I am getting a faded line of text horizontally through the page. I tried new toner but this is not working.

Had a similar problem. The following solution from the Brother site seemed to fix it.

  1. Gently wipe the scanner window with a soft dry cloth. The scanner window is located on the roof of the inside of the printer.
  2. On the top of the drum unit (DR400), locate the blue tab on the left side. Slide it back and forth across the drum about 30 times.
  3. Remove the toner cartridge (TN430 or TN460) from the drum unit. To remove the toner from the drum: hold down the blue lever on the right side of the drum and lift the toner off of the drum unit.
  4. Inside the drum unit there is a green roller. Wipe the green drum roller with a dry tissue (i.e. Kleenex). You may turn this roller by moving the gears on the far left side.

Solid black line on the right hand side of the page. will changing the the toner cartridge fix it

Probably NOT the toner cartridge. More likely to be the drum cartridge. Pull out the toner/drum cartridge assembly and remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit. Now look carefully at the drum. This is the greenish/Blueish colored cylinder. If you see the black line going around the drum on one edge then that will be your proof that it is the drum unit. You can try cleaning the corona wire by sliding the little blue tab there on top of the drum unit back and forth a few times.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.

I've replaced the drum but it leaves a white streak down the page

Pull the drum out and wipe the narrow window inside that is over where the drum goes. It gets toner dust on it and causes that hind of problem, make sure the blue tab on the drum is moved over to the side with the little triangle on it.

Brother HL-2040, The drum light keeps coming on and the left side of the printed page is all black?

Sounds like the toner cart. has toner packed at one end and possibly the drum cartridge is dirty. Remove both from the printer, separate the 2 and vacuum the drum cart. - them blow it clean. Run the drum wire cleaner (purple/blue tab on front edge of drum cart.) back & forth a number of times. Blow out the inside of the printer to get out toner dust. Reinstall toner back into drum cart, then hold GO/Control button down until all lights are on, let go, reinstall toner&drum back into printer, close door. Power down - then back on. That should do it. Worst case, you'll have to replace the drum unit.

I'm getting drum error message, it says move blue tab back and forth, I don't what the drum is and I don't see blue tabs

Open your document feeder cover (it pivots away from you), then open the forward top cover (it pivots towards you). Inside the machine is the drum / toner unit, remove it. On top of this assembly is the blue tab (plastic handle) either on the left or right side. Slide that tab back and forth ~ 4 or 5 times. Reinstall the drum / toner unit. Close the top cover, then the document feeder cover. Done...

Brother MFC 4800. Faxes at receiving end have a line down page

Clean the wire in the drum (remove drum and place it upside down) by moving the blue plastic tab from left to right several times.

It fixed the problem for me.
