Question about Soltek SL-75FRV Motherboard

1 Answer

CPU Upgrade I have the soltek SL-75FRV Socket A Motherboard and my original processor was the AMD Athlon XP 2000+ with Throughbred core and FSB 266MHZ. I'm trying to find out the fastest cpu I can upgrade to without having to update bios. I recently upgraded to a AMD Athlon XP 3000+ with Barton core and FSB 333MHZ which the board supports but the bios needed updating as it didn't display the correct speed when booting up. It was displaying 2800+ not 3000+. And yes, CPU clock and actual processor speed was correct in CMOS setup utility and jumper setting on board was set to 166MHZ, so it just needed an update. Unfortunately the update failed so I'm looking to upgrade to another cpu that doesn't require a bios update and will display correctly. Does anyone know if an update is needed when upgrading to any barton core cpu and if so, if I stick with the thoroughbred core will I still need to update bios if I go for a faster thoroughbred cpu, even if FSB is either 266MHZ or 333MHZ.

Re: CPU Upgrade

Athlon XP 3000+ is 400mhz FSB according to the link(,,30_118_1274_3734^11672,00.html), means that in order to display the actual speed of your Athlon XP 3000+ you have to set your board 166mhz to 200mhz jumper setting or in CMOS utility overclocking option. and also just to inform you that your motherboard is in Overclocked condition when set, because it only supports processors up to 333mhz FSB (

(Motherboard manual states 133MHz.
Note that AMD processors are 'Double-pumped'.
This = 266MHz )

Supports AMD Athlon, AMD Athlon XP, and AMD Duron, processors.

Note in the CPU Support chart where it states -
Socket 462 > AMD Athlon XP > 2600+ (.13u)
The .13u stands for 130nm core architecture technology.

Can I upgrade my 1Ghz processor to a faster 2 or 3Ghz? I have an EliteGroup 741GX-M, socket 462 desktop with an AMD sempron

yes, it is possible, but the Front side bus will limit the functionality so much that it wouldn't be worth it.

Upgrade my processor

You can use either an Athlon, Duron, or Athlon XP processor, with a max front side bus speed of 266 MHz. This is slow compared to today's standards. Most of today's newer processors have front side bus speeds of more than 2 GHz, about 8 times faster.

EliteGroup K7S5A (does not say pro on the board)

According to their website, the board can take:

AMD Athlon XP (Throughbred up to XP2600+)
AMD Athlon (including Thunderbird)
AMD Duron (including Morgan)

You can then overclock the processor with a BIOS upgrade available at

It has one 4X AGP slot so it can take any AGP video card, assuming the card is backwards compatible (8x -> 4x).

Hi, I have to agree "...that the motherboard's bios doesn't recognize the processor and that I should upgrade the bios...". Though I think that this is only a display issue and not necessarily true CPU speed. You can check if the correct CPU is displayed inside Windows by right click on My Computer and details would be shown in the System Properties. To upgrade the BIOS: 1. Determine/log your current BIOS and its date by pressing Pause on initial boot when motherboard details are shown; 2. Continue booting by pressing escape and run your Windows normally. Go to the website of your motherboard manufacturer and verify if they have an updated BIOS (compare date of release). If an updated BIOS is available, download. Likewise download the flashing utility. Further instructions are also available on a step by step procedure. Some newer mb versions/models have a Window based update feature. Check if you have such. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things are or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
