Question about HP Pavilion A6400f Desktop PC, Refurbished

1 Answer

''no audio output device is installed''

I can't fix the sound on my computer. I have an HP Pavilion a6400f PC and am running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition. The sound use to work fine, but after trying to install a new graphics card (which I ended up taking out and replacing with the old one) I keep seeing the message ''no audio output device is installed.'' There are no playback devices listed and I don't have the ''sound, video and game controllers'' tree anywhere in my device manager. Please help.

"Internet explorer cannot download from The operation timed out."

I've gotten this a couple of times after trying to download the driver. Is there a different driver I should try?

You can go to the below address to download drivers for your system.

The driver you want is labeled: "Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Update"

Do you happen to have the original Installation CD that came with the computer?

The issue is more then likely the drivers, but it seems Realtek's website is down, at least to me it is.

You can try going here: and search for the "Realtek High Definition Audio Drivers" make sure its not an update as you need the base drivers first.

    I did find this site

which has a link for a download to the said drivers, if the realtek website is indeed down for you then i would try this site. But, if realtek's site is up for you i would get the latest drivers from there.

My HP pavillion dv6700 laptops sound doesn't work .... the icon has a re x at the bottom and it says no audio device has been installed; it is only 2yrs. old; can this be resolved or would it be best to...

I believe it can be resolved without purchasing a new laptop.

Windows is a 'funny animal'. Sometimes Windows just looses it. You need to reinstall your audio device Drivers again.

It's Integrated Audio used on the HP Pavilion DV6700T laptop. An audio chip soldered to the motherboard.
Another term used for Integrated Audio is OnBoard Audio.
On the motherBoard.

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

(If it wasn't Integrated Audio, it would be a separate audio adapter card. {Sound Card} The audio chip is soldered to an adapter card. The adapter card is removable. This would allow replacing the audio adapter card. Not happening for an HP Pavilion dv6700t laptop)

Drivers are small software programs that allow the Operating System to communicate with the device.
(Windows XP and Windows Vista are two examples of an Operating System. O/S)

There is an HP Pavilion DV6700T Entertainment Notebook PC series, and an HP Pavilion DV6700T SPECIAL EDITION Entertainment Notebook PC series of laptops.

I need to know what Operating System you are using. Do I assume Windows Vista? (Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit)

Going with Windows Vista, here is the Audio Driver download page for the Pavilion DV6700T notebook, (Laptop),

Doesn't matter what version of Vista it is, this audio file is for all versions of Vista.

On the above page left-click on the + sign to the left of -
Driver- Audio (1)

Now go to the right, and left-click on Download, in the rectangular box.

A small box will come up, Opening sp38899.exe
The name of this file is sp38899.exe

Left-click on Save File.

The file will be saved to, where ever your downloads are set to save to. The file needs to be found, then opened in order to work.

When you see the audio file (sp38899.exe) Double-click on it.
The Windows Installation wizard will lead you through installing.

If you are asked to restart your computer, do so.
If not, restart your computer.

Hi, try the following check to see if there is a problem with your device. If you have already done this come back to me!
Go to start, control panel, system, hardware, then device manager; if there is a problem your audio device will be highlighted with a yellow ?.

No audio device installed.

It's unlikly that HP will relesae he needed Vista drivers for your sound device.
That has been a problem with Vista since day 1.
If you want your sound back, you should go back to XP.
Windows Vista use a new software architecture, and hardware devices must comply with it, in order to be used by the new OS.

No sound. yellow (!) by audio driver in device mgr. error 10

Go to your device manager (windows key+break, device manager is on the left) and under "Sound, video and game controllers" will be "Realtek High Definition Audio" which has the yellow exclamation mark. Right click it and select uninstall. Reboot, and Windows should detect new hardware. If Windows doesn't automatically install the proper driver, the latest one can be downloaded from Realtek at the following link:

No Audio Output!!??

You need to download and install the Vista compatible driver from the manufacturer of your sound card.
It is possible that if your card is old, it cannot be supported by Vista, and you will need to replace it.
