SOURCE: riding mower problem

What is the name brand and model? On most riding mowers there are several switches that must be actuated before it will start. First, make sure that blades are disengaged. If there is a handle that engages and disengages them, you might try holding it in the dis-engage position in case the switch is out of adjustment. There is probably one under the seat also. This switch kills everything if you are not sitting in the seat for safety reasons. Also, make sure the parking brake is set, and the gear is in neutral, and not forward or reverse. Also, you should check the battery. It is possible that you left the key on by mistake and drained it.

Hope some of this helps.

SOURCE: 4 year old mower, kept

Is it possible the key was left on and the battery went dead? Maybe try jumping it off of a car battery to test it.

SOURCE: Poulan 38" riding mower.

Battery is likely dead - or has built a sediment bridge - shorting the anode and cathode.
Jump-start the tractor with your vehicle - or another battery to check.

Or - use a multimeter to ensure your battery is not draining to 0V when you attempt to start.
This also indicates a failed battery. It may have a decent float charge - but when the load starter) is applied - the voltage will drop right out.

Try jumpering battery directly to the starter terminal. The ignition switch or start relay could be the problem.

I put too much oil in the mower over the past couple months. Two days ago the mower began steaming. I shut it down immediately. Today I did an oil change and cleaned the mower up but after I started it,...

If you already changed oil and it is at proper level on dip stick let it run for about 5 minutes to burn out any excess oil in cylinder, if it continues to smoke you probably blew a gasket or seal on engine. If that is the case you are looking at buying a new mower unless if it under warranty or you have a cheap mechanic.

I installed a new battery 2 weeks ago and its dead

check first the chip type fuse of the relay for auto start switch, it usually burnt if short circuit occured. replace new one. check terminals ( + and - ) of battery if it is in proper place. finally, test the volt/amphere of the battery if it is charged ok or low. make sure that the battery you are using is supplying the right amphere and voltage required. see ur manual also for battery reference.

'98 Lexus ES300 Won't Start--But Has New Battery!

If your is exhibiting the same signs as a dead battery it really sounds like your alternator is bad. If you are handy, you can remove the alternator and take it to an autoparts store like autozone and they will test it for you. This is not a hard job to do, usually 2 electrical connections, 3-5 mounting bolts and you have to pop the belt off. Just reverse it to install a new one. Good luck! - Nick
