Question about Singer 2732 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Runs full speed without pushing the pedal!!!

When I turn the machine on it runs without me pressing the pedal. And it's going so fast it's shaking the table! Is there something I've pushed to make it do this or is this a machine problem? I would feel really stupid taking it to get repaired if it was something I could do myself.

  1. it sounds like the filter capacitor has failed. the capacitor is usually located inside the foot control but may be inside the machine itself.
try taking the foot control apart (dis-connect from power first). you should see a component rectangular in shape connected to the wires in the foot control. dis-connect this component (it will not adversely affect the running of your machine) and then re-assemble the foot control and test. if this did not fix the problem see a tech.

In an older machine, I would agree with the above reccomendation. But since your machine is rather recent, I would assume it uses an electronic controler instead of carbon units inside the foot pedal. I am afraid you will have to change the foot pedal or get it repaired as these are completely electronic now and do not work on the same principles as the older carbon units did.

When i push my foot pedal on my Brother SE 400 machine shakes and goes into safe mode

TRY TO REMOVE YOUR BOBBIN CARRIER AND NEEDLE AND SEE IF THE MACHINE WILL MOVE SMOOTHLY WITHOUT THEM. IF IT IS RUNNING SMOOTHLY YOU KNOW YOUR PROBLEM IS THE BOBBIN CARRIER OR NEEDLE. YOU MUST HAVE THE RIGHT SIZE BOBBIN. ONCE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT BOBBIN YOU CAN PLACE ONE DROP OF OIL ON THE RACE (LITTLE TRACK UNDER BOBBIN CARRIER) AND PUT THE CARRIER IN. WITH YOUR HAND TURN THE HAND WHEEL TO SEE IF IT IS INSERTED PROPERLY SO IT ROTATES SMOOTHLY. THEY'RE IS A PLACE THAT KEEPS THE CARRIER FROM MOVING. YOU MUST BE CAREFUL TO LEAVE IT LOOSE SO THREAD CAN GO UNDER IT. IF IT IS STILL MOVING SMOOTH WITH YOUR HAND YOU CAN TRY THE PEDAL. IT SHOULD WORK. NOW, REPLACE THE BOBBIN MAKING SURE IT IS ROTATING THE RIGHT DIRECTION. I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH TO MAKE SURE THE BOBBIN IS THE RIGHT SIZE. IF THIS IS OK THEN REPLACE YOUR NEEDLE. THE NEXT STEP IS TO GO TO YOUR REPAIRMAN IF IT IS STILL A PROBLEM.

Why does my T500 sometimes stop

if the machine has been sitting for awhile and you oiled it that will
help, it could be the belt is too loose or the motor is going out or the
foot pedal needs to be checked to see if something is wrong with it.
it would be a good idea to have the machine checked at a sewing
machine shop.

Foot pedal not working

Well, you are definitely getting power from the electric plug in.

Let's do some diagnostic work. Do you hear anything when you press the foot pedal? Any hum? Did you happen to leave it in bobbin winding mode?

your machine doesn't have a "sew" button for use without the pedal. So please rotate the hand wheel toward you as you press the pedal. Did the motor take over and sew?

If you know someone with a meter... have them test the pedal. (they will place probes on/in the part that plugs in which tests for shorts, etc.) If that tests ok... then we know it's something more than the pedal and it will need servicing by a Singer Tech.

According to the manual, there is no speed control on your machine. It is apparently built into the foot control unit. I suspect something is haywire with the foot controller but would suggest taking the machine and foot control unit to a sewing repair service.

Your table sounds like it was cut for a different machine..You might be able to move your motor over to where the belt will come straight down from the handwheel. There is some adjustment that can be made with a wrench on the large nuts that hold the motor up to the table. Good luck.

Refer to the maintance section of the manual, if you do not have one, you can download one from the BL website.

Open the bobbin area and clean away any lint or thread that may have accumulated there.

It the problem continues, the machine needs to go into the shop.

There is an electronic component called a supressor, used to filter interference by your machine to the power in your home which may cause radios & TVs etc to have sound crackle or lines on the image each time you press the pedal........it is not essential to the safe function of the machine, tho' domestic harmony may be strained if others are watching TV at the same time you sew............but it doesn't always cause interference even without the suppressor

You may also have noticed a small amount of smoke and an acrid smell when this component failed.

Generally they are located in the foot control, although some machines bury them inside the main body somewhere near the power inlet.

Ensure machine is unplugged and have a look inside the foot pedal for a rectangular "electronic" looking component with two stout wires.......it will probably be a brown yellow with oozing nasty thick brown gunge.....undo connectors and remove it ....wipe excess nasty stuff off and any associated residue with a fast drying solvent like denatured spirit or metholated spirit.

Now, with the offender removed, re-assemble foot control and you are back in business..............if the component is inside the machine, it will look the same, but the exact location may take some finding......open the base and look near the power inlet for something bearing the former description.
