First unplug your dryer. You will need a 5/16 or 1/4 inch nut driver to remove the rear panel. Also, you will need to detache the vent. Once the back is off, toward the bottom you will see your element. Attached to the housing where the element is there are one or maybe even two safety switches. A.K.A. overloads. Obviously one of them or both if you have two are weak. You should be able to replace them at an appliance parts store where you purchased your thermal overload. To test them, you can place your an ohm meter across the terminals for continuity. If you catch it when it goes out and work quickly, you maybe able to isolate which one it is. Careful to unplug the dryer to avoid being shocked. Good luck.

Dryer stops

If the hum is loud I would suspect something is jammed and the motor is stopped leading to a heavy current running through the motor. After 5 or 10 minutes I would anticipate the circuit breaker would trip or the motor would burn up. If the humming suddenly stops then a thermal overload switch might be activating and when it cools down normal operation resumes. This is my only insight.

Whirlpool electric dryer LER5620KQ1. won't heat up timer does not advance

Same problem with my Whirlpool Dryer: Model LER4634EZ2 which stopped heating. I checked the coils that was "OK" then I checked the fuse that was "OK" I replaced the Thermal Fuse and High Limit Thermostat then after starting the dryer the heat came on ... problem solved NO.... the dryer just kept running and running until I opened the dryer door. Not going to put 70 or so $$$ into this 10 year old dryer which up until 12/15/2011 worked fine.

Amana dryer model YNED7200TW will not start. there is power, but start button does nothing. Resetting breaker did not work. Any ideas?

Thermal Fuse

Item #2986 (OEM Part)
$10.70

Thermal fuse. If the dryer overheats, this device stops the flow of electricity to the heat source and/or the entire dryer. It is located on the blower housing and cannot be reset. The most common cause for overheating is a vent tube clogged with lint, a birds nest or other debris.

I replaced the thermal fuse because there was no heat. Now the dryer over heats and shuts off. Everything checks ok on ohm meter. The timer works in the "no heat" mode. Could it be the timer...

after you changed the thermal fuse did you clean out the dryer and the vent line?if not you blew the fuse again and it will keep doing this until you clean out the duct that the lint filter slides into, vac and blow out the motor and the cabinet where the motor is and blow out the vent line,if it's a long run remove the vent line from the back of the dryer and blow it out with a leaf blower.the dryer went over 300 degrees from lint buildup and popped the thermal fuse,it's a safety so the dryer doesn't run hot and start a fire.if the dryer is running and sfter like 20 minutes it shuts down and won't start for a while until it cools down then the motor is bad also probably from the dryer running to hot from the lint build up.

My electric dryer is not blowing heat, just cool air. What is wrong with my dryer.

Check the following to address this issue.

1. Heating element
A burned out heating element will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Replace the element if found defective.

2. Thermal fuse
Most dryers have a thermal fuse, which burns out when the dryer overheats, in which case the dryer will either not run at all or stop heating. The fuse is usually located on the vent duct, inside the dryer. A blown fuse will show no continuity when measured with a meter. Before replacing the fuse, make sure the blower wheel is not broken or clogged, and there is nothing blocking the venting.
