This is belt drag, you need to take some tension off the drive cable to stop the engine dragging on the belt which in turn stops you pulling it backwards.

thats quite an old machine now s could be difficult to find a user manual. is there anything in particular you want to know?

there will be a butter fly in the carb that pulsates this is conected to rev cable plastic may have snapped or cable come loose
take it it is petrol

Check the blades for bends, and check the blades to make sure they are tight. Possibly has a broken shear key.

The chole is only ment to be used to prime the engine on cold start up, the engine is supposed to be run with the choke in the normally open position.

Sounds like you have dirt and/or moisture in the carburetor float bowl. Remove the bowl and clean it out. place a small pan or bowl under it when you start to remove it to catch the fuel and look for water. It will look like a "bubble" floating at the bottom of the fuel. Get a can of areosol carburetor cleaner with a long tube on it, stick the tube up in the hole where the bowl nut goes and spray it out to remove and fine dirt that may be in there. The following is in CAPS because I cannot stress enough, the safety and hazards of using the carb cleaner:
USE SAFETY GLASSES/GOGGLES AND BE VERY CAREFUL USING THE SPRAY - - IT WILL BURN YOUR EYES AND IF YOU HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN IT WILL BURN THAT TOO

could have water in fuel bowl or tank,coil could be heating up and stop firing or the plug

is it a two cycle or 4cycle do you mix your gas and oil or is it stright gas.
