If you have the condenser fan coming on and the compressor is not coming on chances are you are right. But the compressor could be done for. You will have to ohm out the compressor to make sure. Capacitors are cheap so just turn off the breaker to unit and pull the dual capacitor out and replace. Be sure you write down where the wires go as the fan runs off the same capacitor hence the name dual capacitor.

It could be, could also be lots of other things. Is the indoor fan comming on? do you have 240 volts at the contactor? both sides of the contactor? Is the contactor pulling in? Is there 24 volts on the low voltage side of the contactor? is there voltage at the compresser? Did you ohm out the windings?

What type of run capacitor do I need for a Ruud AC model UPNJ-031JAZ (outside unit)

Looks like it should be a 35/3 370VAC. If it is not legible on the old capacitor read the data plate on the fan motor and compressor. These should say "uf" or "mfd" rating. Good Luck!!

My 4 year old Ruud home a/c compressor stopped working. inside fan blows but compressor won't turn on...what can I do prior to calling the gas company who installed the unit...

Ruud parts warranty from factory is 5 years, the capacitor has possible gone out, it will be in the contol compartment on the out side unit and is a dual run capacitor that controls the compressor and fan motor. Recommend if capacitor is bad to replace entire capacitor. As Stated above the parts are under warranty if under five years old. To verify age the date code is in the serial number after the "F" **** week/year of manufacture. Also outside unit has independent power supply so check fuses if any and circuit breaker.

The fan does not spin

If this unit is located outdoors then it is your condensor fan. Can you hear the compressor come on? If not it could be the capacitor is bad,
If compressor comes on but fan does not, it is most likely your fan.

Power outage last night now my RUUD High Achiever AC Unit model# UPNE-048JAZ will not work

Power surge may have taken out your control board (in the furnace, does the fan work?), possibly the transformer (in the furnace) or possibly the capacitor (in the A/C). Call a professional.

Ruud heat pump capacitor size

A hard start or turbo 2000 will not work if the run capacitor is bad. You will need to contact a ruud supply house or dealer with model and serial to find out the exact match. I have checked my sources and came up empty handed. You could try getting a 35/5 MFD at 440V or a 45/5 MFD at 440V as these are the most common capacitors used in Rheem and Ruud equipment. The key is that you will need to check your amp draws on both motors against the nameplate rating to make sure that you are not over-amping the motor. Also check the nameplates on both of the motors. Most condenser fan motors and some compressors list the capacitor size they require in a somewhat less than conspicious location on the label.
