Closed caption problem with Sony Bravia KDL-46S5100

My newly purchased Sony Bravia KDL-46S5100 does not display closed caption. I put it on CC1 and tried different way (on with mute, C2-C4, Text 1-4) to no avail. Is this a manufacturer defect?

My Sony Bravia KDL-46S5100 is connected directly to Dish Network receiver. Does it make the closed caption go away? Why would Sony sell a TV that would need a software upgrade? My 2 other 10 year old TVs are connected to a Dish Network receiver and a Dish cable and haves no problems with closed caption.

It is connected directly to Dish Network receiver. Why would Sony sell a TV that would need a software upgrade for closed caption? My 2 other TVs are 10 years old, one is connected to a Dish receiver and the other connected to a Dish cable. Neither have problem with closed caption.

OK, I will try to look for CC button on my SAT (Dish Network) remote control. I did not have any problem with CC on my old TVs until I get this new Sony Bravia.

"How do you have the Dish receiver connected to the TV? Direct A/V cable, HDMI or RF out on channel 3 or 4?"

I'm not sure what kind of cable but I see a red & white (audio & video?) and a bundle of 3 gray cables connected from the receiver to my TV.

Got the answer to my own question. This particular gray Dish Network receiver is model # 381 (different from the black receiver). Use its remote control (also gray), click "menu". On the screen go to "system set up", you should see a whole list including "closed caption", click on it, then click "on" and "save". It's working perfectly.

Before tossing in my solution, one more question. How do you have the Dish receiver connected to the TV? Direct A/V cable, HDMI or RF out on channel 3 or 4?

  • May 11, 2010

Are you connected direct to the cable or through a cable box?

How can I turn off CC on my SONY 52XBR. I used the Remote control settings and selected off on the cc display, but the cc never turns off. I also used the menu button on the side of the T.V to select

If Closed Captioning is being displayed even though the CC option in the TV menu is set to Off , then it is being produced by another device, such as a cable or satellite set-top box. To remove the Closed Captioning from the TV screen, it must be disabled on the device that is decoding the Closed Captioned signal.
NOTE: Some set-top boxes may automatically display Closed Captioning on the TV screen when the set-top box sound is muted. If this is the case, turn off the Mute function of the set-top box

if it is a black block, look in the menu under closed captions and see if it is in the text mode. if so change back to cc1 or turn off.

Cannot turn off Closed Caption

Here's the copy on CC from my manual LC-32SB23U.

1. Press CC.
This will present the Closed Caption information display.
2. Press CC while the Closed Caption information is
still on the screen.
Press repeatedly until you select the desired closed
caption service.

INFO BOX ON THE SCREEN,
Air ANALOG
Audio : MONO
CC : 1/2 CC1 ------ Closed Caption information
Ratings : NONE

Example:
If a program has three services (Digital CC(ENG), CC1
and Text1), the closed caption display will toggle in this
sequence:
1/3 ENG -- 2/3 CC1 --- 3/3 Text1 -- Off
The CC button keeps a record of the last service
selected in its memory.
If the last closed caption mode (e.g. 1/3ENG) you
selected is not available for the next program, or on
another channel, the closed caption service that is
available is automatically selected, and this service
appears in parentheses, e.g. “1/3(CC1)”.
Closed Caption services that appear in parentheses will
not be stored in the CC button's memory as your last
selected service. Only services that you have selected
with the CC button are stored.

If this doesn't work, the TV may need a software upgrade.
I can get you a copy of my manual LC-32SB23U for you. But, are you sure there is and "A" in the middle of your model number?

A black box sometimes appears on my tv screen. can you tell me if this is from having the closed caption butten on and why it happens?

Yes, if the closed caption mode is turned on in 'text mode' the set will display a black box even when no closed caption text is available. the normal closed caption mode is cc1. try turning closed caption to cc1 or off. tech7

Closed Caption on Sony Bravia

Try a master reset on the TV. With the TV powered on, prss and hold down the up button on the remote (there are 4 buttons grouped together for up down left and right) and while holding down the up button, press the power button on the TV. The unit should power off and then turn back on and ask you to select a language. Let me know if this helps and be sure to rate this solution. Thanks!

I repair alot of flat panel TVs and whenever you're dealing with a problem with OSD (on screen display) That means that the microprocessor circuit is having a problem. The microprocessor is always found on the main board of these units. So I suggest you take it to an authorized Sony repair shop to be checked out.
