Push in on the thumb button towards the top middle of that cage. then pull the back towards you. it is hinged on the front corner. Unit should just tilt out to you and come right out of the tower.

My imac dvd drive reads DVDs but ejects CDs and installation disc

The optical drive has separate hardware for reading CD-disks and for reading DVD-disks.
So, "half" of the drive has failed. Replace the drive, since that will be less-expensive than an attempt at a repair.

I can't import anything or burn a disc

A cd rom or dvd rom are not functional as burners. You need cd burner or dvd burner.
your question is not clear as to what configuration you have, but confirming that your hardware is capable of burning cd's / dvd's is your first step.

CD Drives read only
COMPACT.DISKS.
DVD/CD Combo drives are meant to have support for DVDs and CDs
Of course it's not going to work! it's not compatible, either buy an external CD/DVD Drive. or replace your CD Drive with a DVD/CD Drive.

I am watching a dvd on my dell inspiron 6400 and it is saying special features can be watched if I insert the disk into the DVD-ROM drive on my computer but obviously the disk is already in it.

That is a generic message that assumes you are using a DVD player, not a computer. There should be extra menu items under "Special Features" for PC-DVD material. Poke around the menus and see what you find.

I can burn cd's but not dvd's

Hello Rfd832,
What I see from the description is that the drive is a combo drive. Combo drives are CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives means
CD-RW = Compact Disk-Read Write
DVD-ROM = Digital Versatile Disk - Read Only Memory
so these drives can read and write CDs but can only read DVDs (Cannot write or burn DVDs)
If you want to be able to burn DVDs then you need to have DVD RW drive (either DVD+RW or DVD-RW)

You said that you are able to burn DVDs on other computer so please check the label on the DVD drive.. it should be DVD-RW/DVD+RW drive

Hope that helps.. :)

Thanks and Regards,
Srinivas

Installing a new DVD drive

Step1::Ground yourself by first touching a metal object or wearing an anti-static wrist strap. This helps protect your computer's internal
components from damage due to static.
Step2::Shut down your computer and unplug it to protect yourself from electric shock.
Step3::Open your computer's case using the door on the side or follow the manufacturer's directions for your desktop.
Step4::Install the DVD ROM on its own IDE channel. Since a DVD ROM uses a good bit of memory, it should also be the master drive. Set your old
CD ROM or secondary DVD ROM drive to "slave" and set the new DVD rom drive to "master."
Step5::Slide the new DVD ROM in the free 5 1/4-inch bay and use clips or screw into place if necessary, then use the data cable that came with
the DVD drive to connect your new drive. Plug in the power cable as well.
Step6::Replace the cover on your computer, plug it back in and boot it up. If you have Windows XP, it should automatically detect and attempt
to install the new DVD ROM drive. If it doesn't, use the installation disk that came with your DVD ROM.

COMPACT DISC,RECORDABLE DOOR KEEP POP UP BY ITS SELF.PLS HELP ME TO CLOSED IT SO THE DOOR DOESN'T POP UP BY ITSELF

you may need to replace your cd-rom drive, you can try buying a new cd-rom drive for around 30-40$ which also will mean you'll have a DVD-rom instead of cd-rom.

thanks
Thomas
