If it's really old it might have died. You can replace these easily. I would recommend an asus DVDRW.

I don't know how to download cd's and dvd's on dell EL-1210-09

What do you mean download cd's and dvd's? You don't download them, you simply put them in the drive and play them. If you purchased a music cd or a movie dvd that you want to play or watch, then just put it in the drive. The system will recognize it and automatically open Windows Media Player for you to play it or you can open it yourself if autoplay is not active.

Exactly what is it that you are trying to do?

If you are talking about putting a blank cd or dvd into the drive to copy music or a movie to it, that's another story and will take a while to explain. You will basically need to make sure your CD/DvD drive can burn CD's or Dvd's. Then you will need some type of burning software (later versions of Window Media Player will burn).

Click Start/My Computer and look at your devices. if your DvD/CD Drive is listed look for RW which means rewritable (it can burn or copy). If it say DVDrw it can read and write dvd's. If it says CDrw it can read and write cd's. You can also look on the drive door on the computer where you would place the cd or dvd. If it says Rewritable CDrw (it can write cd's) or DvDrw (it can write dvd's). If it says ROM (read only media), that means it can Read Only and not write.

If the drive is rewritable then the software such as Media Player will allow you to go find what you want to put on the cd or dvd. You have two ways of putting things in the software to burn or write. You can copy and paste, or you can drag and drop.

I have installed a used cd-rw drive on my compaq presario 5360 desktop do I need software for it also.I wanted to upgrade it to a cd-rw drive but I have windows 98 I don't use this computer for the...

OLD IRON DAY; (ouch)
5360 ? or CQ5360SC) the full model number of PC matters, !
why in the world run win 98,, ? on a newer Compaq?
yes you need DRIVER (software base) to run any CD drive
and it must match, the drive, and OS. run
there is no win98 drivers, for newer drives. or PCs.
no CD driver makers NAME OR MODEL STATED by you...

so no answer possible (accurate)
but. .can say this,,, as most tech would say btw...

when using relic, 98, go to the drive makers web site
read the support page there, read if it supports win 98
if not, it will never run.on 98

The 5360 WAS MADE IN 1999, IT IS 18 YEARS OLD.
A relic of the past century. and not supported by anyone.
not the PC nor HP or MS are supported.
The makers of CD-RW drives, do not support 98 today
so that leaves you trying to find a CD-RW drive
that has, w98 drivers matching, it from 18 years ago.
wow, what hard thing to do or try.

Try to run w7 on it ). sure would but in fact id send it to the trash.
buy 2007 or newer PC. with SATA PORTS.
PATA (aka, IDE old) ports PC are DEAD technology.

Choices:
  1. find a CD-rw drive PATA not already dead and w98 drivers for it, be like near imposslible task, endless,
  2. buy a newer PC, YAH , that the rigth choice
  3. with Windows 7 on it. be super wise. or newer.

Windows 98
it's dead, MS does not support it.
Nor does HP (it's double dead)
nor do any modern DVD or CD drive makers, now.(we run SATA now)
only OLD PATA drives were made for 98 and most are dead now.
some NOS parts exist, but finding the drivers for it and not getting a virus infection (malware) is near imposslble.
most makers of old CD drives, PATA there support pages
are LONG GONE. ;long ago.

why not find a 2007 and newer PC> for dirt cheap and end the pain. of windows 98 and PATA and no USB ports and yeah more pain.
all OS VISTA and older are DEAD, zero support.

if H3LL bent on 98, find a seller of a CD-RW drive
that promises comes with W98 drivers
I see none..

not having the driver software
is like car with no TIRES.

find a PC like this. 2007 or newer is best (for a FUTURE)

I have a sony computer, the model where every thing is built in behind the screen. a CD is stuck inside and i cannot remove. anyone have any knowledge on what to do to remove same?

The CD, DVD or BD drive tray may not open when trying to eject a disc. This can occur if there is a mechanical failure, or if there is a disk stuck in the drive.
Please follow the following steps to resolve this issue:
  1. Because some applications can prevent the drive tray from opening, close all open applications.

NOTE: If the Roxio DirectCD software is running, eject the CD using the Roxio DirectCD software.

  2. Attempt to eject the drive tray using the eject command of the operating system.
  3. Restart the computer to the BIOS by continuously tapping the F2 key on startup and, while in the computer BIOS, press the EJECT button on the computer.

NOTE: If the drive tray ejects in BIOS, but not in the operating system, reinstall the CD, DVD drive.

When I Play Music through Winamp/Media Player it

That is unusual - pressing in case should not effect play - not like a tape drive would.
Are you playing from CD or Hard-drive?
If Cd - try copy music to hard-drive and see how it plays - if ok - then something may be rubbing on CD in CD-Player? But that would give read errors. Have to remove CD Player and clean it.

Need drivers for a compaq dvd rom 114 , can you help ??

A driver will not improve that situation any. There are no drivers other than what is provided natively by the os.windows xp includes support that allows the drive to read a data or music disk. Compatible dvd decoding software provides the support that allows it to read/play a dvd disk.

If you have a non-detection problem, please perform the "delete lower and upper filters fix" outlined here:

Might be worth a shot...

dot.gif Unable to read a CD-R or other recordable disc. Question: Unable to read a CD-R or other recordable disc.
Answer: Unfortunately this can be a difficult question to answer because of the amount of potential reasons for this issue to occur. Below is a listing of several steps and recommendations that can be taken to help identify the cause of the issue and/or resolve this issue.
Drivers Verify you have the latest drivers installed for the CD-R or recordable drive. There are numerous driver related issues that may cause a CD-R drive or other recordable to stop reading a CD-R disc. If you are running Microsoft Windows verify your drive is properly detected and listed in Device Manager with no conflicts or errors.
If Windows Device Manager detects an error on the drive or if it has other drives listed in Device Manager with errors on them remove the device from Device Manager and reboot the computer to let Windows re-initialize the drive.
If Windows shows no errors, the above steps did not resolve the issue, or you are running a different operating system check with the drive manufacturer for updated drivers. A listing of disc drivers can be found here.
CD-R disk Not all CD-R disks are compatible with all types and speeds of CD-R drives or other recordable drives (especially earlier CD-R drives). Verify the manufacturer gives 100% guarantee for supporting all drives and disc speeds, for example, TDK discs often give a 100% guarantee.
Pre-mastering/Mastering Software Pre-mastering software can sometimes produce incorrect tracks due to bugs. An incorrect ISO image could be generated, or incorrect sub header codes could be recorded in the case of Mode 2 discs. A good way to check whether the incompatibility problems lie with the originating software or with one of the other causes listed above is to test the same disc on several CD-ROM drives. If one drive is capable of reading the disc back correctly, chances are that the problem was not in the mastering, but is one or more of the other factors listed.
Disc is a recordable disc that the drive or player does not support Verify the drive supports the recordable media you are attempting to read. Below are some situations to watch out for.
  • Old CD-ROM or early DVD drive - Some early CD-ROM drives and Gen 1 DVD drives (some of the first DVD drives released) do not support CD-R discs and/or CD-RW discs. Not only does this apply to computers but also home entertainment DVD players.
  • CD-RW in CD-R or CD-ROM drive - CD-R drives are incapable of reading CD-RW drives. If you are using a CD-RW disc verify the drive is a CD-ROM or CD-R drive is capable of reading the disc.
  • DVD recordable discs - If you have a DVD recordable disc and are unable to get it to read verify that the DVD drive is not a Gen 1 DVD drive and/or that it supports reading the DVD recordable media you are using. Additionally a standard CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, etc drive is not able to read DVD discs.
Disc was created incorrectly Make sure you're creating the disc properly. For example, a common mistake users make when creating audio CD's that they can listen to in their computer, car, or home stereo is burning the MP3 files or other files directly to the CD as a Data disc and not an Audio disc. All this will do is burn the data files to the disc and not create an audio disc. This may allow you to listen to the audio files in the computer but will not allow you to listen to the music in the majority of other CD players unless they support MP3 format.
Disc or DVD contains media content not supported by the player Not all home entertainment DVD players are capable of supporting and playing all the different formats movie files and audio files are stored in. Make sure the format or codec of the movie or audio file you're saving to the CD or DVD is supported by the DVD player. If you're computer is capable of playing the files off the DVD but your home entertainment DVD player is not able to play the file it's likely you're encountering this issue.
Bad disc If after reading through the above recommendations you still continue to have the same issue it's possible that the disc is a bad disc. Try re-burning the disc and if possible try a different type of recordable disc.
