Question about Sherwood RX-4103 Receiver

Technics turntable plays but no sound with Sherwood receiver

I have an approx. 25 yr. old Technics turntable SL-BD35 that works fine with my similarly old Technics receiver. The receiver has been cutting out recently (another problem that I could use some help with) so I purchased an Sherwood receiver RX-4103. This receiver supports my CD and cassette players but has no phono ports so I connected the turntable to aux. The turntable plays but no sound comes through the speakers unless I really crank the volume. I tried all the other ports; CD, tape, TV/VCR but the same result. I tested the turntable again on the Technics receiver (while it lasted) and it still works fine. Is there anything else I can try or, for some reason, will the Sherwood receiver not support a turntable? Thanks.

The problem is the fact that the new receiver has no phono input. The phono input has an extra stage of amplification built in. Your receiver is working fine. You need to purchase a phono pre-amp. These run around $20. Connect the turntable to the preamp and the presmp output to any line level input on your new receiver and everything will work as expected.

It's worth investing in a good quality basic pre amp, Project make a beauty called the black box, they run from a separate PSU so you can isolate the power to a different mains socket (helps with mains noise) also a neutral sound unlike the cheaper ones... Been there and done it!

Technics SL-D33 Channel drop.

There's nothing wrong with the turntable then. It's your receiver that's the problem. In order to hear a magnetic cartridge it has to go via a pre-amp. It's this pre-amp that has failed in your receiver. It's only used by a turntable so wouldn't affect anything else. You should be able to trace this pre-amp by following the turntable socket wires. It will probably be a small IC that has failed. If you look up the number you should find it.

Distorted sound on Technics SL-1200/1210

You could be getting acoustic feedback from the speakers to the TT's. Lower the volume or somehow isolate them from room sounds and vibrations.

Technics SL-L3 turntable no sound until warm up

either the cartridge is bad in the phonograph tone arm.  Or the pre-amp in the stereo is bad...remember that the turntable is the only accessory that uses the pre-amp input on the stereo.  I'm betting the pre-amp is bad.

Technics multiple play spindle wearing out it seems.

Need the model number. Technics released over 100 turntables between 1970-1990 - so a model number would help us in determining what you need.

Technics SD-L3 TURNTABLE

Does your receiver have a dedicated phono input? If not you'll need to use a preamp between the turntable and receiver. Your other turntable may have a preamp built in and the Technics not.

If this does not help, please post the brand and model of both your receiver and your other turntable.

hello

You need a belt.. Lift up the record support..(platter) Underneath you will see a metal post.. Belt goes around that and the bottom of the plate.(there is a rim) . If the belt is there, motor might be bad..

All my vinyl sounds warped on turntable

Most common problem is the belt getting soft, especially if it has sat for a long time. It will get a weak spot where it sat on the drive pulley and every time the turntable goes around and hits that weak spot it will slow down a little making it sound like a warped album.

The belts are usually very easy to replace. Usually just lift off the turntable or there might be a small clip on the center pin, then it lifts off. Replacement belts can be ordered from several places, as shown in this search... http://www.google.com/search?&q=SL-B200+Technics+turntable+belt
