Question about Dell Latitude D620 Notebook

Resolution resets after reboot

I have an Acer Aspire 5720 with an Intel 965 GMA which I have just switched from Vista to XP SP3.
The only thing that isn't working is that when I boot the computer the resolution starts at 640X480, then if i try to change it through windows display settings nothing happens, and only through the intel GMA icon in the tray can i alter the resolution, but after reboot it reverts back to the lowest setting.

I have tried the drivers from the acer and intel sites, installing both in and out of safe mode, tried a registry alteration to remember settings from "kelly's korner" which is listed as a solution in many other sites.

I cannot figure out what is wrong, nor can most of the internet it seems, I would greatly appreciate some help.

No, there is no yellow question mark and this is what is puzzling me and alot of people, it says the adaptor and all video and sound drivers are intalled fine but yet on boot goes to the low res setting and has to be corrected every time.

  • low_slinger Apr 14, 2009

Ok, I'll try the first two as I re-installed XP twice this week which didn't help.

What registry programs do you recommend?

  • low_slinger Apr 14, 2009

just tried a registry fix program, just called free windows registry fix. I did'nt think it would be the top of the line, it said it fixed hundreds of problems but after it had fixed the registry I re-booted and still the low res comes back.

Did you try the Last Known Good Configuration (Press F8 as the laptop boots up)?

The only thing I can think of is that part of the Registry is screwed.

There are some Registry Fix programs available that might fix your problem.

You might also try Windows Repair.

If all fails re-install Windows, I know it is a pain.

When you go to Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager - is there a yellow ? against the video driver?

If there is, then the video driver was not installed or an incorrect one was installed.

The RAM module/s may be faulty or needs reseating because the video card grabs some of the system RAM. If you got two RAM modules then swap them around in the DIMM slots.

Try deleting/disable the video driver or change it to standard VGA.
If you can uninstall the video driver then OK.
Reboot the laptop and reinstall the video driver and it usually requires a reboot for the driver to take effect.

Also try connecting an external monitor to the laptop's external video port, power up the monitor first then the laptop. The video should automatically divert to the external monitor. Then try and change the screen resolution. If this doesn't work then there is a possibility the Video card might be faulty.

As a last resort reinstall Windows it may fix your problem.

I've run out of further ideas, good luck.

How can I change the resolution from 1280 x 800? This is the highest possible according to the display setttings. I have removed the generic pNp monitor. I am running Vista Business. The display adapter is...

Graphics Unable to use the native resolution, such as 1920x1080, 1680x1050 and 1440x900 circuit388.gif Symptom(s):
On some displays, users may be unable to use the native resolution when using Intel® chipset graphics. Resolutions such as 1920x1080, 1680x1050, and 1440x900 are not available in graphics properties.

Cause:
The display's EDID is not read properly when connected to some digital flat panel displays. Display devices describe its capabilities by sending EDID (Extended Display Information Data) to the computer.

Solution:
Intel has released a graphics driver to specifically address this issue; however, there may be side effects to this solution such as longer than normal resume times from standby. This solution will only work with external displays such as DFP displays connected to the computer's VGA port. This driver is not designed to address issues with a notebook's built-in display (Local Flat Panel) or with TV’s connected to the system. This driver is provided as is. Intel has not tested, and does not guarantee, the operation of the driver for this purpose.

Video Card Problems

You need to run the recovery and allow Windows Vista to rule the roost. If you do not want to do that then you need to get a different hard drive,(preferrably a new one) And load XP on to it. Your laptop is designed to run Vista and the drive is coded to do so. After so many updates on XP it will pick up on your recovery partition because of SP3 update. No way around it unless you switch drives. I don't think you have permissions to delete the partition with Recovery on it. Get a different hard drive.

Need a good laptop

After doing some searching this is the closest one I can find. It comes pre-installed with Vista, but includes a down-grade CD to XP Pro. Its the Travel Mate 5720-6337. I can get this unit for $1399 plus shipping. If you would like the Media Center version of XP, it would be an additional $120, and if you would like for me to pre-install it for you, it would be $250 instead of $120. If you are interested, feel free to contact me and we will make arrangements.

ACER Aspire 5720

Hi All,

We are a workshop in Spain & I have had several problems with "Down grading" to XP. There is essentially one problem which causes an issue with the XP installation & that is if the the BIOS has a "Fixed" sata configuration. By that I mean you cannot change it to some sort of IDE or P-ATA (Symantics). Our current problems are with an Acer 5720 & an HP Pavilion DV9700. The Acer solution is exactly as "kraken3000" had mentioned before:
1. On POST (Powerup). enter BIOS by pressing F2
2. Tab along to the second option "Main"
3. Goto last option "SATA mode" & press enter.
4. From the small selection display select "IDE mode"
5. Save & exit the BIOS. This will then set the SATA mode for XP to be recognise.

DONOT set this back to SATA Mode after you install the XP as it will NOT boot. This setting must be kept untill you "Upgrade" (If ever) to Vista. The HP is another story...

Visit the Acer Panam site & download & install the XP drivers & your good to go...

I hope that this was of help...& good luck folks
