Was it a backfire pop? If so, you may want to check the flywheel key.

SOURCE: RIDING LAWN MOWER STUCK IN GEAR

Have someone to rock you while you attempt to move gear shift. Hopefully it is only stuck between gears and will disengage. Your grease in gearbox may have become hard causing problems. If you wash the gearbox with water when hot (after mowing) You may have created moisture in gearbox causing major damage to transmission.

SOURCE: blade belt diagram for John Deere LX178 Riding

Remember the belt rule, V of the belt goes in V pulleys.Flat pulleys that are stationary or move get the back of the belt. You can figure it out. Its not rocket science. Remember at some point there has to be a tensioner, usually gets the back of the belt if its a flat pulley. U may have to remove the spring and then reattach the spring after the belt is routed.

Riding mower makes fast loud whirring noise and wont start

Starter bendix is bad, starter is turning, causing the whirring sound, but bad bendix isn't pushing the gear up to mesh with the flywheel teeth. Repair bendix or replace starter.

My bolens riding lawn mower was working great til i hit a low spot with longer grass it got real loud than shut off, when i tried to start it it will start turning over than pop real loud a couple tim

Try starting this without the blades engaged. Bottoming out will affect the deck but not the motor. In fact, remove the drive belt for the mower altogether and see if the engine runs fine. If this is the case then you have to look at where the damage is on the deck.

My mtd riding lawn mower makes a load pop after i cut my lawn and i cut the key off

The loud pop is of course, gas vapor exploding inside the heated engine. To alleviate this, let you tractor engine idle for about 15 seconds after mowing before you turn it off.

Locked down motor

Unfortunately it sounds like you threw a connecting rod in other words a blown motor. The connecting rod has become disconnected from the crankshft and is jammed up between the case and the crank itself, the engine must be dissasembled and rebiult.

check fuel pump and check gas tank and filter for dirt, check oil level if all ok check kill switches also it maybe the shaft key may have broke it is just a long square piece of metal that is hammered in to a grove in the shaft and is meant to brake off so the shaft wont break if something hard is hit. The mower wont start till this is replaced.
