Question about Computers & Internet

Laptop overheating Recently, when watching DVD's on my laptop, it overheats to a point where the disc has to be removed, until both the disc and disc drive have cooled enough before I can continue watching. I have visually checked the cooling fans (not dismantled the laptop) and they both operate upon startup. But when the disk drive is in use the fan on the right hand side (adjacent to the drive) does not operate. is this correct? This, I suspect, is what is causing the problem. I am in the royal navy, and currently on deployment. So as you can probably imagine, the laptop is used in an highly populated, enclosed space, and not very well ventilated. I try to help by placing the laptop on a flat surface so that the bottom of the laptop is exposed. Still though, my laptop is overheating. Also, will it do any harm to continue DVD's in this state, having to remove the disc from the drive, letting it cool, then continue? My upmost appreciation for anyone with advice, or even a solution. Thankyou - Tom

Does the cooling fan spin up?
It may be seized up or spinning slowly.
If you can't get a replacement fan, and if you can get access to the fan, gently peel back the label covering the bearing and drop one or two drops of light machine oil on the bearing, wipe off the excess and replace the label, Spin the fan several times, if it doesn't spin freely get a replacement.

hi.Fan Always Runs Or Laptop Overheats And Shuts Itself Off
Warning! Before Disassembling Laptop always unplug power and remove the battery.
Laptops that shut down without warning are often experiencing overheating issues. Overheating may be a symptom of age, of clogged ventilation or impending failure, but it can also result from simply using the laptop in a bad location. Before you try to take the laptop apart to look for problems, it pays to patiently troubleshoot the symptoms and see if an easy fix is possible. I wrote The Laptop Repair Workbook to teach basic laptop technology and troubleshooting to regular people and techs in training. If it didn't overheated in the past, then your laptop might overheat because the ventilation system doesn't work properly anymore.
Check if the ventilation is blocked in any way. Just to be sure, blow some air through the cooling fan vent (on the left side of your laptop). If dust comes out, then continue doing so until there is no dust. Also, if your laptop had this condition for a long time, then you should replace the thermal paste or thermal pad on your processor because it might have dried out and it isn't efficient anymore.
Another reason would be a faulty component. For example, if your laptop overheats near the battery and the battery itself overheats, then the battery is the culprit and should be replaced or removed until a replacement is avaible (for example, this issue was common in Dell laptops rendering the battery useless after a short period of time).
Also, high work loads make laptop computers overheat. If you play a resource demanding game for a long time your laptop will overheat for sure.
For better feedback, describe when does your laptop overheats and where (as a whole or a certain area).

Overheat and shutdown hp mini laptop

Overheating When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

From the description the new DVD driver is defective and should be returned if still under warranty. The only concern that I have is the replacement you got is identical to the original and that it is not a aftermarket product, because they don't have the same specifications as the original.

Many DVD players exhibit these systems when they are overheated, make sure that it is not covered to the point that it is not getting air to cool with, IE if you have the TV or a cable box on it, it may be blacking to many of the air vents on top, or the other unit on it may be producing to much heat, which is being transferred to the DVD player, causing it to overheat.

Insufficient information, but try this for starters:

Make sure the laptop sits on a hard surface and the fan vents are not covered/clogged.

1) Run windows only on a fully charged battery and see if it overheats
2) If not, run media player only, and look for the same

If it overheats in either step, you have a hardware/software problem.

Hardware problem could be that the fan has failed completely and needs to be replaced.

Software problem could be incorrect fan settings, although I do not think you can turn the fan OFF on a laptop.

IF the laptop overheats in Step 1, I would definitely suspect a hardware problem. In that case, run the laptop but do NOT log into windows. Go into the BIOS (check fan settings in there, if there are any).. leave it running in BIOS and see if it overheats then.

It is a mechanical problem believe it or not. The grease on the rails that the laser rides on is not doing it's job. Clean off old grease & reapply white lithimuim (hope I spelled it right). I have fixed computer dvd-cd, stereo, cd players & dvd players with this method.
